BMA Warns Public Of Fraudulent Phone Calls
The Bermuda Monetary Authority has warned the public about fraudulent telephone calls from an individual posing as a BMA representative and attempting to obtain personal banking information.
A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Monetary Authority [Authority or BMA] has been made aware of telephone calls to members of the public from an individual purporting to act on behalf of the BMA.
“The caller has reportedly used the name “Michael Smith” and has sought to obtain individuals’ banking details and/or advised individuals that their bank accounts will be frozen. These calls are not legitimate communications from the BMA.
“The Authority wishes to remind the public that the BMA will never request personal banking details from any person by telephone. Members of the public should not provide bank account details, passwords, security information or other personal financial information to anyone making such a request while claiming to represent the BMA. This is consistent with the Authority’s previous public warning concerning telephone phishing attempts.
“Anyone receiving such a call should not provide the caller with any banking or personal financial information. If there is any doubt as to whether a communication genuinely originates from the BMA, the recipient should independently verify the communication by contacting the Authority using its established contact details or by calling the BMA’s main telephone number [441] 295-5278.
“Persons receiving attempts to obtain banking information purportedly on behalf of the Authority should contact their bank directly and consider reporting the matter to the Bermuda Police Service.
“The public is urged to remain vigilant regarding unsolicited telephone calls, emails, text messages or other communications from persons purporting to represent the Authority.”
