BNT To Host Free Verdmont Art House Event

October 9, 2026 | 0 Comments

The Bermuda National Trust [BNT] invites the public to Verdmont ‘Art House’, a free open house on Saturday, 17 October, from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, bringing art, craftsmanship and history together as part of Bermuda Art Month.

A spokesperson said, “The day will feature live artist demonstrations, family activities and free guided tours of the historic house and detached kitchen at 11:00 am and 1:00 pm.

“A historic house and African Diaspora Heritage Trail site dating to 1700, Verdmont is renowned for its architecture, historic furnishings, portraits and decorative arts. The event will also explore the stories of those whose skills and labour shaped the property and its collections, including enslaved Bermudians whose contributions have often gone unrecognised.

“The programme features Bermudian artists Nashon Hollis and Shanna Hollis, alongside Bermuda-based artist Christina Wilson. Nashon will demonstrate portraiture and painting, Shanna will lead participatory art-making, and Christina will demonstrate the craft of paper flower-making—each drawing inspiration from Verdmont.

“Throughout the day, visitors can enjoy short presentations exploring historic portraiture, craftsmanship and the culinary and medicinal arts associated with Verdmont’s kitchen and gardens. Creative activities for all ages will invite visitors to make artwork inspired by the property, with the opportunity for children to submit their creations to the BNT Art Competition sponsored by SOMPO, which closes on 31 October. Visitors are also welcome to explore Verdmont’s period rooms, collections and gardens.”

Dr Charlotte Andrews, BNT’s Head of Cultural Heritage, said: “Verdmont offers a wonderful opportunity to explore the connections between art, craftsmanship and history. We want visitors to appreciate the significance of the house, detached kitchen and collections, but also to connect with the people whose skills and labour shaped this place and the objects we share with visitors today. By bringing contemporary artists into Verdmont, we hope to offer new perspectives on its history and inspire everyone attending to engage creatively with our heritage. Stop in for a little or stay all day—our team would love to welcome you!”

A spokesperson added, “BNT gratefully acknowledges the Bermuda Tourism Authority for its financial and marketing support for this special Art Month event. Visit bnt.bm for more details.”
