Luton Town manager Jack Wilshere is hopeful Bermuda striker Nahki Wells has not suffered a serious injury after being forced off during their 3-1 victory over Doncaster Rovers in Sky Bet League One yesterday [October 27].

The 36-year-old had scored three times in his previous four matches and is Luton’s top scorer with eight goals this season.

Wells impressed in a deeper role in midweek with Jordan Clark unavailable and Callum Marshall recalled to the starting line-up as the striker.

However, shortly before half-time, Wells grabbed his hamstring after crossing the ball from the right.

He received treatment and was replaced by Tudor Mendel.

Asked for an update after the match, Wilshere told Luton Today: “I don’t know what it is, but I think if you remember last year, Wycombe away where he went down and we thought ‘oh no,’ and it turned out it wasn’t that bad.

“He was looking after himself, he’s experienced, he knows his body, so we trust him with that. Hopefully it’s the case where it’s not too bad and we will have to wait and see.”

Wilshere explained the thinking behind Wells’ altered role, saying: “That was the idea at times for Nahki to drop low, sometimes play higher with Marshy, and I thought it was working quite nicely.

“Nahki’s an intelligent player that knows when to drop in the spaces.

“When they were trying to be aggressive, he was the one dropping down and the centre backs didn’t want to go in with him.

“So we got a little bit of joy with that and I thought Jake did that really well second half.”
