Caribbean legal markets remain resilient amid global uncertainty

“Transactional activity remains strong across the region, with mergers and acquisitions [M&A], financing, refinancing and restructuring generating significant legal work. Investment funds, insurance and private wealth also continue to drive demand for specialist legal advice.

“In the British Virgin Islands [BVI], banking and finance workloads have remained steady despite global volatility.

“The Cayman Islands continues to demonstrate a robust corporate market, supported by an active initial public offering [IPO] pipeline, renewed special purpose acquisition company [SPAC] activity and increased liquidity supporting cash-funded transactions.

“Bermuda has maintained activity across insurance, shipping and financial services, while real estate, tourism and luxury development remain important sources of legal work in markets including the Cayman Islands, St Kitts and Nevis, the Bahamas, and Turks and Caicos.

Digital assets, fintech and regulatory complexity drive demand

“Digital assets and fintech have become increasingly prominent features of the Caribbean legal market, creating new opportunities and regulatory challenges.

“The BVI has experienced growth in cryptocurrency-related regulatory instructions and fund tokenisation, while the Cayman Islands is seeing significant activity in Web3, on-chain lending, tokenisation and other digital asset transactions.

“In Bermuda, digital asset activity continues across corporate, finance, regulatory and insurance markets. Cyber-risk insurance is also becoming more common as artificial intelligence [AI] and digital assets develop.

“Regulatory and contentious work remains significant across the region. Increasing regulatory scrutiny, anti-money laundering [AML] requirements, sanctions, licensing and financial services compliance are generating mandates for law firms.

“Disputes work continues to encompass insolvency and liquidation proceedings, shareholder and trust disputes, asset tracing and increasingly sophisticated restructuring matters.

Leading firms and jurisdictions in the Caribbean 2027 rankings

“The latest rankings highlight the breadth of legal expertise across the region, with several international offshore firms achieving particularly strong representation.

“Carey Olsen leads the regional firm rankings table with 21 rankings, followed by Walkers and Conyers, with 19 each, and Appleby, with 18.

“Walkers achieved the highest number of individual ranking entries, with 71, while Carey Olsen secured the greatest number of Leading Partner rankings, with 32.

“The Cayman Islands remains the largest jurisdiction covered by the guide, with 116 firm rankings and 241 individual ranking entries, followed by:

“British Virgin Islands [BVI]: 67 firm rankings and 122 individual ranking entries.

“Bermuda: 42 firm rankings and 111 individual ranking entries.

“These results reflect the continued importance of the Caribbean’s leading offshore financial centres and the depth of legal expertise supporting businesses, financial institutions and private clients across the region.
