Minister Lightbourne Invited To AFROTECH
The Minister of Home Affairs Alexa Lightbourne has been invited as a featured speaker at AFROTECH Conference 2026, taking place from 2 – 6 November at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas.
A Government spokesperson said, “Celebrating its 10th anniversary year, the 2026 AFROTECH Conference will see more than 40,000 people in attendance.
“The conference brings together global technology leaders, investors, entrepreneurs and innovators to explore emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence [AI], digital infrastructure and economic opportunities.
“Minister Lightbourne will present on the topic “How Small Nations Are Winning Big in Global Tech Infrastructure” on Thursday, November 5th, highlighting Bermuda’s unique strategic position in international digital connectivity and its growing relationship with Google.
“As Minister of Home Affairs, Minister Lightbourne leads key areas supporting Bermuda’s digital infrastructure development, including the Department of Energy, telecommunications policy, and Digital Transformation, which was added to her portfolio in July 2026.
“Her responsibilities include overseeing Bermuda’s relationship with Google on its subsea cable investments: the Nuvem and Sol systems, which landed in Bermuda in June 2026, and the subsequently announced Canoa project connecting Bermuda to the Dominican Republic.”
Today Minister Lightbourne said, “Bermuda is demonstrating its key role in shaping global technology infrastructure through strategic partnerships, forward-thinking policy and regulatory certainty.”
The Minister added, “Our determination extends beyond attracting investment. We are building a digital future in which Bermudians are not simply consumers of technology, but innovators, creators and leaders. Our growing relationship with Google is a powerful first step in laying that foundation for us to turn global connectivity into real opportunities here at home.”
A Government spokesperson added, “In addition to her presentation, Minister Lightbourne will participate in several executive events, including the first AFROTECH Policy Breakfast, designed to bring together country leaders and industry experts to discuss policy and economic challenges shaping the future development of technology in communities.

Yes, Minister Lightbourne, please tell everyone there how the Bermuda Government is Winning Big in Global Tech Infrastructure – by being hacked!!!
Hopefully attendees will bring their favorite dressings for the word salad that she’ll serve !
I’m sure those attending will be thoroughly impressed by the Minister explaining how our government allowed itself to get completely fleeced by Google for pennies.
Google negotiators and lawyers are probably the best in the world. No doubt they played to the egos of Mr. Big and his posse on having “bragging rights” to a Google installation. That is what I would have done when dealing with such egos.
And here is the bragging: “Minister Lightbourne will present on the topic “How Small Nations Are Winning Big in Global Tech Infrastructure” on Thursday, November 5th, highlighting Bermuda’s unique strategic position in international digital connectivity and its growing relationship with Google.”
We little folk in Bermuda get nothing out of the deal, not even free Internet. Not even free cybersecurity advice for Government and businesses.
