Ascendant Donates $500,000 For Nonsuch Island

One June 23rd the Ministry of the Environment, Department of Conservation Services and the Ascendant Group of companies announced that they have agreed a public-private partnership to assist with the long-term preservation and restoration of Bermuda’s Nonsuch Island nature reserve.

Ascendant, which includes BELCO, Bermuda Gas & Utility Company Limited, PureNERGY Renewables, Ltd., and BELCO Properties Limited, has committed to provide a variety of resources, including workforce to remove invasive plants and plant natives and endemics, as well as in-kind and financial support.

Ascendant’s commitment includes $500,000 over a period of 10 years to help preserve and restore Nonsuch Island and its related islands to their original, natural state, working in partnership with the Department of Conservation Services.

Minister of the Environment, Youth & Sport Glenn Blakeney said:

We are pleased to have Ascendant as our partners, as work continues to ensure the ongoing preservation and restoration of the natural habitats and native species that make Nonsuch Island Bermuda’s living museum. Long-term collaboration between our Government and the Island’s grassroots corporate citizens is essential to the health and well-being of our community, especially the health of our unique island environment.

At the end of the 10-year period in 2020, Ascendant and Conservation Services will review the agreement to determine the viability of extending this public-private partnership for Nonsuch Island conservation and restoration.
