Employment Report Shows Jobs Decline

The 2010 Bermuda Job Market Employment Briefs shows a decline in employment in Bermuda. There were 39,520 jobs counted in 2009 compared to 40,213 in 2008, a loss of almost 700 jobs. The construction and hotel industries have been hard hit, construction held 3,488 positions in 2009; a loss of 161 jobs [4% decline] from 3,649 jobs posted in 2008. Employment levels in the hotel industry continued to decline, moving from 2,942 in 2008 to 2,719 in 2009, a loss of over 200 jobs.

The number of jobs held by Bermudians declined by 391 jobs, while positions filled by other non-Bermudians decreased by 435. However, Spouses of Bermudians and Permanent Residents recorded moderate increases in the level of jobs filled for 2009. Business services sector employment dipped by 129 positions or 3 per cent from 2008.
