Murder Victim: Troy “Yankee” Rawlins

August 9, 2010

troy yankee rawlins bermudaThe murder victim from this morning [Aug 9] has been named as Raymond Troy Rawlins, better known as “Yankee”.

In what can only be described as a horrific start to the week, this morning saw 2 shootings in less than a 30 minute timeframe, as minutes before Mr Rawlins was fatally shot, a 21-year-old man was shot in the area of the Devonshire Boat Club. These two shootings combined to make the third shooting in only 72 hours following the shooting of 24-year-old Prince Edness only yards away early Friday morning.

The 47-year-old father-of-eight was shot multiple times inside the Spinning Wheel Nightclub on Court Street, and was prounced dead at 1am this morning. He had been targeted before in the same area; in 2009 shots were fired at him in broad daylight on Court Street although he was not harmed. The next day, when appearing in Magistrates Court, Mr Rawlins was reported to have an armed Police escort.

Well known to frequent the area for many years, Mr Rawlins was widely known in the community and was a frequent figure on Court Street. Assistant Commissoner of Police David Mirfield said the Police believe Mr Rawlins was targeted, and that the shooting was gang-related. Eyewitnesses tell us that the shooters hopped out of a waiting car, opened fire, and drove off.

This isn’t the first time a shooting has occured in Spinning Wheel, with a case occurring in the mid 1990s which saw a young Charles Richardson open fire in the club. Mr Richardson famously went on to rehabilitate himself, earning a law degree in prison, and becoming one of the island’s top defence lawyers.

Anyone with any information is urged to call the Serious Crime Unit on 299-8115, or the independent 24 hour confidential Crime Stoppers Bermuda hotline on 800-8477, or send an anonymous tip via the Crime Stoppers Bermuda website crimestoppers.bm.

Bernews extends our sympathies to Mr Rawlins family, friends and his children.

  1. ??? says:

I don’t not belive that anyone had the right to play God and decide who lives or dies… but Yankee choose the life he lived and unfortunatly has suffered the consequences of his actions. My heart goes out to his children & family.

  2. Jersey says:

I’m a lost for words. God save this Island…R.I.P. Troy..Judge not or be judged..God is our only Judge…..my prayers go out to his children..you will be missed, but never fotgotton…

  3. Confused... says:

Um…what does Charles Richardson have to do with this case at all? That entire paragraph was irrelevant and unnecessary.

    The End.

    • bernews says:

That is standard for us, we often give a historical perspective and reference previous circumstances. Look back over all our shooting posts and you will see that.

It is nothing negative towards Mr Richardson, I personally am a huge fan of his, and think he is an excellent example of rehabilitation, and should be an inspiration to those involved in this lifestyle, that no only can you “get out”, you can rise to the top.

      • Jessica says:

Thank you for adding that. I find other news sources often do not include relevant context in their stories. This adds a personal, familiar touch to the news reporting and goes one step deeper to link stories and lives together. Very appropriate.

      • Only In Bermuda says:

        Bernews,

You guys have an awesome website. You keep Bermuda informed of what is taking place on the island as soon as it happens. Keep up the excellent work and keep being professional about it.

    • Hope says:

Charles Richardson was involved in a last shooting that took place at Spinning Wheel back in the 1990′s. That might be why his name came about.

  4. KFR says:

@Confused…..That paragraph can be seen as there can be a positive outcome from a negative siutation if a person changes their life style and that is very relevant.

do not be so quick to say something is unneccesary – sometimes it’s irrelevant things to you that can have a huge impact on others.

  5. ingrid lindo says:

let he without sin cast the first stone, don’t leave derogatory comments remember Yankee was a father ,A brother and a son, and its wrong to talk of the dead ,he’s gone stop the gossip…

  6. onionjuice says:

‘ Gangsters don’t live that long ‘ and if you don’t know, now you know.

  7. Judge and Jury says:

I really don’t understand the fools who keep saying “Judge Not”. When you live in “SOCIETY” we all must Judge ACTIONS! No we cannot judge a persons soul or heart we leave that to God. But damnit why the hell do we have court systems and “JUDGES”??? Why do you decide to pick up the phone and call police when you see certain behaviour. I’ll tell you why, because society can and must judge whether or not someone’s behaviour is anti-social and destructive, illegal. This high profile figure was well known. So don’t pretend that you respect God anymore than you respect the laws in our civilization. You bet I’m making a judgement here, and this man is a sign to all of us of the consequences for such a lifestyle. GROW UP!

I listen to the talk shows, read the papers and it is the same thing. No one admits to what these guys are into. I’m sorry but, you live by the sword you die by the sword. I am so tired of people commenting on oh what a great guy he was, (this is directed to all that have been shot and that are mixed up in dealing and whatever else), NO he is not a good guy. Please people open your eyes, how many lives have these alleged dealers and alleged gang affiliates destroyed. Yes, everyone has a choice in life – this is unfortunately the life they have chosen.

  15. Wisdom says:

Not one of us is good… we ALL fall short of God’s glory. Just thought I’d put that out there for all those who have so much to say?

  16. Always Love You BooBoos says:

If you got to know him instead of sideline viewing him you would know what a great person he was. He had the kindest heart and the most soothing soul. If there was someone you needed to talk to one who had wisdom he was your guy. You people judge him by the streets. But we all can be judged by our street character (how about the criminal defense runners that use drugs once they leave there place of business or that man that goes home and beats his wife and kids or even that chick that sells her ass for a part-time job). Not just Bermuda but this world will not change.. ok everyone is looking for the answer to end these anti-social problems. But who is going to go the extra step of applying the answer. Who’s going to take that head pounding stress from that criminal defense worker, or who is going to feed that chick and her family she is only trying to provide a better life for so they too would not have to degrade themselves to make it through life. Not any government, social worker, lawyer, teacher or accountant. But people like Yankee helped both that dirty crack head son of d women that worked so many hours that she wasn’t home enough to teach him self-confidence/pride/love that is freezing in the street nights when we are covered and cozy and that successful multimillionaire who is about to lose his mind over the stress from the one he trusted most is stabbing him in the back. It starts from the top well above Yankee. He didn’t make Bermuda what it is he adjusted himself to the forever revolving world as we all do. Everyone deals with situations differently where as one does not agree with the others way. So because you don’t agree with his choice he should be killed. He was killed because of assumptions that no one had the balls to go and talk to him about. Like you people talking crap now. He knew his time was growing short and therefore he enjoyed the last years of his life.
So if he is the root of what’s going on why is it still going on (take the time and think about it)..you people are fools it don’t take a college degree or masters to have common sense. The free education most of you who are negative, reply to this tragedy lack.

    • spoons says:

what a load of rubbish. he was a convicted drug-dealer and criminal. If he had any shred of respect for his family he would have given up his life of crime and gone straight. This is so obvious I cannot believe you would write such diatribe about him being kind-hearted.

  17. Always Love You BooBoos says:

So Spoons do you know him that well that you can say he didn’t.. Regardless if he changed a day or year before his death. That’s what is wrong with the world today no looks pass the wrong to see the right. I clearly see your cup is half empty…poor sight
