Raleigh: Voyages of Self-Discovery for Youth
The local branch of Raleigh International is looking for a few good Bermudians to take part in its latest adventure expeditions.
Founded in 2004 by Bermudian lawyer Michael Spurling, Raleigh International Bermuda is a branch of Raleigh International (UK). The programme’s structure and philosophy are intended to help Bermudians between the ages of 17 and 25 develop skills and self-confidence in fun and challenging environments far removed from the classroom and workplace.
Raleigh will be holding briefing sessions on its upcoming 2011 programme on Monday, November 15 and Monday, November 22 from 5.30 to 6.30 p.m. at its offices on the second floor of 2, Midsea Lane just past BAA on Serpentine Road.
The programme involves a six-month training and selection period leading up to a 10-week overseas expedition to either India, Malaysia or the Nicaragua/Costa Rica region of Central America and a few months of post-expedition follow-up and activities. Raleigh fully funds all participants through the generosity of sponsors, which includes the expedition fees, travel expenses, and most of the equipment/kit needed.
Participants are required to take part in some fundraising activities. In previous years the dozens of young Bermudians who have now taken part in Raleigh since the initiative was launched have travelled as far afield as Borneo and Malaysia to work on environmental protection and sustainable community projects.
“After the expedition, participants are required to give a community presentation about their experience to Raleigh sponsors, supporters, and their parents and friends,” said a spokesman. “Additionally, they will participate in sponsor presentations and media appearances. To give back to the community that gave them this opportunity, participants identify a community project to work on. In previous years participants have worked at Sunshine League, Salvation Army, Maritime Museum and Windreach Recreational Village. Finally, Raleigh assists participants with working towards their future goals by identifying possible job placements, continuing education programmes and scholarships.”
Application forms for the 2011 programme can be downloaded from Raleigh’s website here.
Good morning Bermuda…now this is what I’m talking about. A structured programme for young people to develop skills and self confidence and get to know who they are. Bermudian young men should be encouraged and jump at this opportunity instead of yielding other destructive behaviors. I encourage government leaders and the public to push this endeavor.
I was in the same group as Cushi. It was one of the best, if not the best experiance ever. It truly is an excellent program and deserves support from the government to ensure that it continues to help the young people of Bermuda.
Michael Spurling deserves the highest praise for putting together the Raleigh International in Bermuda! Hopefully this organization will grow from strength to strength.
