Tomorrow: Queen’s Birthday Parade

June 17, 2011

bermuda regiment colours 2010The Queen’s Birthday Parade will be held tomorrow [June 18] morning along Front Street.

This year, there will be two guards from the Bermuda Regiment, including the Colour Party displaying the Battalion’s new Regimental Colours presented by Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Gloucester last year [pictured].

Also on parade is a joint Police guard [Cadets, Reserves, and Regulars] commanded by Inspector Charlene Thompson, and guards by the Bermuda Cadets Corps and the Bermuda Sea Cadets.

The parade, which will have a reduced number of soldiers due to financial reasons, will be commanded by Major George Jones, and this will be his last major duty in the Regiment after almost two decades of Service – he retires on 20 June 2011.

The guards will display all the pomp and pageantry that is expected, and will be viewed by His Excellency The Governor of Bermuda and the Premier.

The military in Bermuda has always celebrated the Sovereign’s Official Birthday with a June parade. Until the 1950s, the ceremony took place at the Prospect Garrison field. From 1950 to 1955, the Queen’s Birthday Parade took place at Bernard’s Park. In 1966 the parade shifted to Front Street where it has been held ever since.

The soldiers of the Regiment will be conducting their exciting feu de joie or fire of joy, and the 21 Gun Salute from their 25 pound guns, conducted by the Ceremonial Gun Troop. This year, the guns will seem significantly louder as they will be placed at Number 1 Car Park and will be on display for the duration of the parade. In previous years they have been placed at Albouy’s Point.

The Bermuda Regiment, led by the Bermuda Regiment Band and Drum Corps, will leave the Cabinet Office Building, transition onto Front Street and proceed to the Flag Pole. Upon the completion of the parade, the procession will travel back up Front Street and return to the Cabinet Office Building. There will be traffic restrictions for the duration of the parade.

The Parade forms up at 9:45am and will last for approximately and hour and a quarter.

This is confusing to me since it seems that much effort was put into getting rid of the Queen’s birthday celebration… replacing it with our own Heroes Day… and now it seems that there will be some celebration after all. And being held on a Saturday mid-morning when all the stores will be open and people will be trying to get on with their business… it’s likely that it will be an unwelcome event with minimum public participation. It makes me wonder if it was designed so that the celebration’s fate can be sealed once and for all.
