Hockey: Bermuda Lose 6-0 To Uruguay
[Updated] The Bermuda Women’s National Field Hockey Team lost their second game in the 2011 Pan American Challenge Cup, being defeated 6-0 by Uruguay today [Aug.1].
Uruguay scored in the 3rd, 34th, 48th, 59th, 63rd and 69th minutes to rack up their 6-0 point win.
The Challenge Cup is presently being held at the Deodoro Hockey Complex in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and ends on August 7th. Bermuda – the smallest nation in the group – played their first game yesterday, losing 3-0 to the hosts.
After the game Bermuda’s Coach Dafydd Hermann-Smith said, “I’m very proud; to go three quarters of a match down three goals and having [only] surrendered four penalty corners that is an accomplishment for us.”
“We lack exposure and continuous hockey. I think the girls played very well. Three goals down three-quarters into a match against a top side like Uruguay is not surprising. For the tiny island of Bermuda, this is a very acceptable result.”
Bermuda team member Kirsten Faria said, “We played with passion and heart in the match; that Bermuda always plays with. We had a strong backfield with strong tackles and it was suprising how long we were able to hold off [Uruguay’s] offense especially given their level.”
“Bermuda played phenomenal and we were also unlucky. This was a great result especially given Bermuda’s historical results against Uruguay.”
Bermuda’s team consist of Captain LaKae Dill; goalkeepers Latonia Fray and Candace DeSilva; defenders Marcia Ford, Heather Sinclair, Kirsten Faria, Kristen Rego and Jasmine Patterson; midfielders Liz Stewart, Keishae Robinson, Iman Smith and Jennifer Chisnall; forwards Ryanne Bardgett, Erica Furtado, Raven Pearman, Alex Francis and Yvonna Osborne.
They are accompanied by manager Tracy Stewart, assistant manager Lisete Moniz, coach Paul Deans and technical director Dafydd Hermann-Smith.
