Dr. Anthony Knap Resigns From BIOS
Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences [BIOS] board of trustees chairman Brian Duperreault today [Nov. 28] announced the resignation of Dr. Anthony Knap as the East End research facility’s president and director.
It has been reported that Dr. Knap stepped down for “personal reasons.”
“Effective today, Monday, November 28th, 2011 we have accepted the resignation of Dr. Anthony Knap, president and director of BIOS after 34 years of service,” said Mr.Duperreault.
Bermudian Dr. Knap joined BIOS as an assistant research scientist in 1977 and became director in 1986.
His principal research interests are environmental science, organic geochemistry, long-range transport processes and deposition of chemicals in the oceans, atmosphere/ocean interactions, effects of chemicals on the marine environment, and climate change and business interactions, as well as relationships between ocean health and human health.
Dr. Knap is an Honorary Professor at the University of Plymouth and is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Delaware and NOVA University. He serves with several international organizations and has served as the chairman of the Health of the Ocean Committee for the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS). He is co-chair of the Coastal Ocean Observing Panel for GOOS. Dr. Knap is the author of over 80 peer-reviewed journal articles and one book.
Earlier this year Dr. Knap spoke to Bernews about seismic activity off Bermuda after a small earth tremor rocked the island and BIOS’ role in helping to chart global earthquake activity.
Speaking on Dr. Knap’s replacement Mr. Duperreault said, “Dr. Nicholas Bates has been appointed interim director.
“Dr. Bates is a Senior Research Scientist and Associate Director of Research at BIOS and also an Adjunct Full Professor at Duke University and the College of Marine Studies, University of Delaware.
“He is well respected in the international scientific and research community. A global search has commenced for a permanent replacement for the director’s post and we hope to be able to make an announcement in due course.”
