Rabain: Talk ‘Demeans Civil Rights Movement’

July 30, 2013

SylvanR_200pxX200px_72dpiMinister Sylvan Richards “demeaned the civil rights movement,” and such comments are “frankly insulting,” Opposition Senator Diallo Rabain said yesterday.

Speaking in the House of Assembly on Friday, Minister Sylvan Richards [pictured] spoke about various matters, including the past performance of the PLP.

A recording [not the best quality - sorry!] of Minister Richards full comments is here [MP3].

The Minister said the PLP “decimated our economy” but “don’t want to talk about that…they want to live in the past and talk about the 1960s, slavery and emancipation..”

“I went to Howard University I know all about that stuff,” said Minister Richards. “I can talk that black black blackety black stuff all day too you know. I can talk it, I am a Howard University man. Make no mistake about it.”

The Minister’s statement was brought up during the Senate’s Motion to Adjourn yesterday [July 29], with both sides commenting on the matter.

Senator Diallo Rabain speaking on the matter yesterday:

Saying that people had contacted him to express displeasure over the commments, Senator Rabain said, “To have someone that attended an HBCU [Historically Black College University] to stand there and diminish the struggle that black people have gone through to get to the point they have gotten to, and to afford someone like himself to be in the position he is in, that he would talk about them and bring them down…..and demean the civil rights movement by calling it blackety black stuff…it was just incredible to hear that.”

“That is the type of talk that will drive division through our ranks. That is the type of stuff that when you hear it people get upset, people get riled up….and we don’t need that,” said Senator Rabain.

Senator Michael Fahy speaking on the matter yesterday:

Senator Michael Fahy also addressed it saying, “I was not privy to the entire speech but I think the dangerous thing is when you start taking a small line of an entire speech, it can easily, easily be taken out of context.

“What I find disingenuous at best, and I did it mention in the Senate today, in the past we have seen Ministers of the Government using language which has been absolutely deplorable. We have to remind people what people have said. When they use words like field n-word and house n-word…”

“Where was the outrage then?” asked Senator Fahy. “Where was the outage when other deplorable comments were made repeatedly by the previous Government?”

Senator Fahy said as we come into Cup Match weekend, we need to remember what it is about, emancipation and people coming together, and that is what we should focus on, not the “politics of division which were clearly at play today in the Senate.”

  1. Where ya been says:

    “black black blackety black stuff”

NO way! He really said that.

Slyvan, take yourself on the next plane and stay there.

    • Tommy Chong says:

OUCH! That’s a tad bit too personal even if it is true.

    • Raaz says:

Ahmen! We only want people in government who make us feel spashul…

  2. Mazubo says:

Cant expect much from a SORRUGAT!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Truth (Original) says:

      Wow.

When trying to insult someone, check your spelling. It’s ineffective, otherwise.

      • Mazubo says:

Funny you knew what I meant.( SURROGATE )Thanks anyway
Its still effective to me LMAO

  3. Um Um Like says:

    Oh please Diablo Rabain!

  4. Bermuda Male says:

    The PLP outraged?

    Well I never…

  5. Bda Live says:

that’s not cool at all. If that is the decibel of what anyone hears – including the younger generation – is that how Mr Richards wants to have parts of black history perceived and how he wants people think that is how he recalls black history as “…stuff”? Come on Mr. Richards. retract and revise your statement, think about who hears and may hear those words and how YOU will be perceived as such. Clean it up. and to all those using those other derogatory terms in the House.and Mr Fahy – just because others have spoken in such a derisive manner in past, does NOT make it this instance ‘ok for a pass’ because ‘others have done similar offensive speech too’. That should NOT be your comeback. Come on. Seriously is that how you really feel about it too? If so you’re just as bad. smh.

    • E$ says:

His comments were that where was the outrage when previous ministers used worse words and nobody said nothing.

    • Tramsparency for Real!! says:

@bad Live, thanks for your comment, especially when the OBA promised that they will do politics differently. These comments by Richards do not reflect OBA acting or doing Politics different at all. In fact it only shows there is no real change. Mr Fahy is way off-the-mark to find a silly excuse for Mr Richard’s behaviour when he himself lacks an understanding of the black cultural struggle.

      • E$ says:

hahaha you make me laugh. so where were you kickin s*** when Ewart Brown and others from the PLP said far worse things? oh that’s right you didn’t care….go lay down already. ya disgusting…

        • Time Shall Tell says:

No, E$. What is disgusting is the promise of change but you feel we should accept more of the same instead….

  6. Why are you surprised? says:

    Why are you surprised?

Minister Fahy trying to deflect again for his party’s mis-step – - please.

Minister Richards statement was demeaning and wrong – period.

Why can’t the OBA stand by their statements or just simply apologize when they mess you (you hear me Nandi?)

    WASP

    • Bermuda Male says:

Sorta like other PLP use race as a way too deflect from the topic being discussed.

In this case their mishandling of our economy and government finances.

There is a time and a pace for all types of conversations.

But what do we know as we are all house ******* and rednecks anyways according to your chosen representatives. Right?

      • Tommy Chong says:

You can’t cry over spilt milk or who spilt it when they are not the new ones elected to mop it up. We need to look at the new government & what they’re doing or not doing & be critical of them not the opposition who only can talk at this point.

    • sonso says:

The point that Minister Richards was trying to make is exactly what this PLP press release was all about!!!

Instead of focusing on the matters to get our island turned around, the PLP just wants to nitpick at points of interest that, well, interest them. get on with the peoples business for crying out loud!

The real talk of the situation here is that the PLP put policies and procedures in place that was supposed to help lift the black man up. Which they did, by hiring multitude of government workers at an inflated wage with minimal work, by awarding contracts to “friends and family” which came with mass overruns bore by the taxpayers, as well as spending money on ridiculous campaigns and initiatives to make it all seem nice and peachy (Faith based tourism and the Bermuda music festivals with Beyonce etc).

So, instead of accepting their missteps and failures at their dismal time in power, and working with the current government ministers to move the island forward for everyone, all the PLP ministers want to do is harp on the past!

Makes me laugh, i dont know about you!

      • Concerned says:

I am in total agree with you.

      • Hmmmmm says:

You know, I’m really tired of hearing people like you refer to the Beyonce appearance in such demeaning tones. Its actually quite ignorant. Beyonce is a world class artist who brings with her a considerable following wherever she performs. As an “A-lister” a country or venue should be proud and lucky to secure her. That’s why she continues to be in demand. Part of the reason our tourism is in the toilet is because of our attitude to what drives business and visitors to our shores. Beyonce concert or the fact that A-listers like her hang out in Bermuda and feel welcome here would be a boon for our country. Instead, we get cheap and petty opinions like yours and so many others about the one time that she came here and the supposed price tag for it.

So, what’s the result? She performs and vacations everywhere else and those destinations make loads of money off their affiliation with her and her husband. Meanwhile, back here in Dopey-Land, we’re suffering with no brand recognition and virtually no awareness outside the white Connecticut country club set. When’s the last time an A-lister was even photographed vacationing in Bermuda?

        Go figure.

        • sonso says:

lol, just like the opposition; picking one point out of my argument and run with it! i was speaking more to the excessive amounts spent by the former government. yes these festivals went on for multiple years starting out as the Jazz Fests, but, Beyonce was quite possiblly the biggest name to have come here, and clearly it wasnt sustainable after this, as i havent heard of any other Music Fest since 2010??

          in fact:

UPDATE: 2011 Bermuda Music Festival has been canceled.
Tourism Minister Patrice Minors stated that the music festival has been canceled for 2011 due to low return on investment. The festival was not attracting enough tourists to justify a spend of about $3 million. In 2008 and 2009, a total of about 1900 tourists came to Bermuda to attend the Music Festival. It is questionable whether the next year’s festival will be revived and will depend a lot on the new proposals by the organizers requiring far lower budgets.

        • who knows says:

So what you are saying is you dont want any of that “white” Connecticut country club money?

        • E$ says:

And how many people would follow her to expensive a*s Bermuda…nobody. When you can see her in foreign for cheaper, stay for cheaper, party/drink for cheaper, why come here. simple. STOP being a hata

        • Sandy Bottom says:

Hmmmmm, here is a little secret for you. Beyonce didn’t come here because she wanted to “hang out” here. It wasn’t anything to do with whether she was “welcomed” here. She’s welcomed pretty much everywhere.

She came here because she was paid $2m by a stupid short-sighted government that was maxing out the Gold Card on trinkets. And what was the return on that “investment”? Nil.

It’s wastes of money like that, that led directly to the 4.6% cuts last week.

      • Tramsparency for Real!! says:

@sonso….I think you need to take a close look at the OBA over the past 6 months as government. Their record does not speak well, they have made so many errors and picked an incompetent AG who has screwed up big time.

IF there ever was a “FAMILY and FRIENDS PLAN” in PLACE, I think you are overlooking the current OBA who have given it out their own, such as consultants, and contract jobs. Look at the government boards and SAGE. WHO are on these boards, WHO did they give consultants jobs too, Who has received government contracts so far?

SToP SLEEPING PLEASE and point the finger back at your own OBA government. That is where you need to do the pointing. Or are you afraid you will discover there is no change by the OBA?

The OBA has failed to bring a high standard of debate to the House of Assembly. If they preached that they will be transparent, they have failed at that as well. I think your quick to point out PLP, when in fact the government of the day is lacking big time and failing.

Mr Richards looked like a dumb MP in his presentation. I would not have told anyone I went to college, after all his language skills sounded like a preschooler learning to talk. Advise him to talk speech and language class 100 or communication skills 101, maybe he missed that course in college..

        • sonoso says:

You said in your first line… the first 6 months! Give the government time!

And who on earth do you think the consultancy and contract jobs are going to go to?? foreigners? clearly the friends and family that the PLP picked got us into this mess in the first place, so why on earth would you expect the OBA to go running back to the same F&F? Would you rather they contacted Ewart Brown to be the head of SAGE?

And what is this “high” standard of debate you speak of that is not being delivered? Mind you i do not keep abreast with the political banter in the house, rather just care for the final outcome which, hopefully, benefits the betterment of the country.

The crux of it all is that your beloved PLP (i dont know you but by your wording i guess you do not like the OBA just like i dont really care for PLP) left OUR island is such a devastating state of affairs that the OBA is taking longer than anticipated just to get a grasp on things. Just wait, i am sure that many more revelations of the last 7 years of the PLP administration will come to light.

How about you take your blinders off, reread the SAGE commission recommendations and think about it rationally. At the end of the day, the people of this country voted the OBA in for a reason, give them time to prove their votes.

          • Tramsparency for Real!! says:

@sonoso and RawOnion are living in OBA Denial Sydrome. How long will the OBA keep using the excuse it has only been 6 months. Heck pre-election they brag they had all the solutions, yet have failed today to even provided a PLAN to turn our economy around. The OBA has no Plan, at all, except to play the same old Blame it on the PLP card, which is getting useless. Yeah keep repeating the OBA strategy talk, which is blame it on the PLP, as the OBA has NO NO other solutions or a PLAN. I got it, accept continue to say it was the PLP. This tells us that OBA has nothing to offer Bermuda, or a way to improve things.

The reality is the OBA has given out contracts and key jobs to their “Friends and Family” only. They are taking care of only those in the upper income bracket, while not caring much for the average down-trotted working men. OBA seems to pushing forward laws and policies that benefit the non-Bermudian rather than the Bermudian. This is what you call change. Guess it is change for a selected few only !!

They have failed to be transparent. ON several key laws in the house, they did not vote to make them fully transparent. This is an outright lie that they are the government whom will exercise a high level of transparency, when often failing to do so. You are also defending the indefensible behaviours of this OBA. Poor quality of debate in the house by the OBA, and lack of work to bring to the house. If this is the change folks voted for, we are all doomed.

            • Sandy Bottom says:

So the PLP don’t want to take responsibility for what they were doing last year, yet you demand an apology about things that were going on 60 years ago.

        • Watching On says:

My only question is, where can I see who is on what Government Boards? Royal Gazette was unable to help, as they said they only get what OBA wants them to print.

      • RawOnion says:

Thank you sonso, you said exactly what i wanted to say. Furthermore, that is one of the reasons the PLP lost the election because everything was blackity, black, black, black to the point that it offended whites and Portuguese (and many blacks) whereas the PLP needed their votes to win the election. That’s why I didn’t vote for them again.

  7. Tommy Chong says:

“I can talk that black black blackety black stuff” LMAO! Sylvan’s watched CB4 one too many times. I’m not sure if Sylvan relates himself to Allen Payne’s character but there’s a reason why he was casted for that part instead of Chris Rock or Deezer D.

Does Sylvan realize that the man who brought Bermuda to it’s knees was also a,“Howard University man”. Going to Howard University doesn’t prove Afrocentrism especially when a group of students from howard were part of an instigation of the Washington riots that destroyed an entire African American community. It just proves that some are more privileged than others & bragging about it might be considered somewhat condescending to those who can’t even afford to go to college.

As for Senator Fahy, its always funny seeing someone like him say n-word but I do wish like Sylvan he took a hollywood reference & said n-bomb instead because that would have been hilarious but I guess Red & Meth’s movies would be a bit too blackety black for him to have seen. Besides if Fahy wants emancipation to come about he should emancipate himself from assisting wealthy business owners & start helping the poor jobless Bermudians. I know Senator Fahy didn’t cause unemployment here but its about time he lives up to his promise to make changes the fix the problem & actually stick to those changes if he really wants to be that minister he has been nominated as.

    • JD says:

Tommy – Let me try and explain something to you. Helping business owners and poor jobless Bermudians are one and the same thing, you don’t help one out to the detriment of the other. You do both.

If you make the island friendly to business owners then they will establish here and start new businesses and will probably bring people in AND hire Bermudians. The people that are brought in will demand a myriad of services which will provide more jobs to Bermudians. Understand?

I’m convinced your posts are just purposefully divisive.

      • E$ says:

        He’s a little slow, don’t mind him.

        • Tommy Chong says:

You be careful of those stones in your glass house. You may want to put the rest in your pocket till mommy lets you out to play.

          • E$ says:

hahahaha what mommy didn’t let out to play at all?

            • Tommy Chong says:

Wasn’t really raised by mommy but the nice lady I was given to use to let me out & play after giving me good advice to keep me in line. She’d say, “Always remember. There’s a fine line between loving life & being greedy for it.”

        • Zombie Apocalypse says:

And he was out late last night counting foreign waiters.

          • Tommy Chong says:

Twelve years ago it would have taken a night to count all the foreign waiters on this island but not now. Besides remember I’m slow so I can’t count past 400. Plus being this slow makes it hard to differentiate whether someone who tosses salad or makes frappuccinos all day long is considered a waiter or chef. If I count them as waiters then my task gets compounded with all the buzz chains scattered across this island.

            • sunny side up says:

where were all the bermudians who applied for those jobs and had good enough attitudes and references to GET the jobs? seriously. there used to be a great pride in just having a job and doing it well, but e.wart convinced everyone that only IB jobs were worth your time and you should shadow sven for three years and then take his job, just by virtue of being bermudian…. all these menial labour and waitstaff jobs are below us now – we should be CEOs and lawyers, just by showing our passports. tommy chong, why don’t you open a training school with high standards for blue collar jobs and place your graduates. that should solve the problem and create a stream of ready employees for business owners. do it.

              • Tommy Chong says:

You do know you’re saying that ewart hypnotized 2000+ people into thinking they could become ceos & lawyers?

                • sunny side up says:

so why aren’t bermudians getting these jobs? it’s because they don’t want them. talk to any employer who has had his or her business hurt by bermudians who don’t bring a decent work ethic in the door with them…they are then forced to go to the expense of bringing in foreign labour for blue collar jobs. it’s pretty easy to figure out. and it certainly isn’t anyone’s scheme to screw bermudians – bermudians are screwing themselves….

                  • Tommy Chong says:

So what you’re saying out of these 2000+ there is not even a handful that have a decent work ethic? Now this is a prejudice remark but since it’s against Bermudians not a foreign worker no one will comment. This really paints a picture of who posts on this site.

                    • sunny side up....... says:

No I am not saying that at all. Apparently, you are, if I am to apply the same word twisting rule to your comments, as you do to everyone else’s . Why don’t you do something constructive instead of carrying on your ludicrous rants. And look up discrimination, prejudice, and racist while you’re at it. I think a refresher on what those words mean would help you out. You sure are confused about plenty of things! Poor thing.

                    • Tommy Chong says:

@ sunny side up I already know about discrimination, prejudice, and racism because I know my ancestors history & they lived it & still today many Bermudians live it.

I never twisted your words. If you didn’t want to come across as being discriminatory you would have typed, “ some bermudians who don’t bring a decent work ethic in the door with them” instead of “bermudians who don’t bring a decent work ethic in the door with them” but then that would prove a point that some employers in Bermuda judge all Bermudians work ethics by their past experience with some Bermudians & try their best not to hire Bermudians do to their prejudice views. It seems you are the one confused about the instances of discrimination.

                    • sunny side up says:

                      poor little tommy chong
only knows how to sing one song

      • Tommy Chong says:

O.K. I’ve read your comment & now let me try and explain something to you. Helping business owners & poor jobless Bermudians are only one and the same thing if business owners hire poor Bermudians. Now not all bermudians are candidates for IB or white collar jobs but the majority can do the blue collar jobs that many foreigners are hired for. Many employers eschew Bermudian’s job applications especially when they already have permit workers who’s permits they can easily renew. There are present permit holders who have come to Bermuda as tourist then were given a job, ones who have come here on fake credentials & ones who come with no credentials at all but are still hired. On top of all this there are employers who overdo the specifics needed for a job so it limits those who can apply then bring in someone who doesn’t have those specifics & get them trained onsite. Oh yes! last but not least underhanded there are those who are brought in on a permit to do one job & end up doing others that are not part of what they were brought in for.

You claim I’m divisive. How so? I can’t divide the poor from the rich or the employed from the unemployed. These lines are already drawn out without any of my doing. This is an extremely obvious reality that I’ll admit was part of our previous governments doing but I can’t blame them now for the continuation of it when the one who have the present means are not them.

Now your response will be that I don’t have proof of my claims but the proof is glaringly obvious when anyone looks at the statistics of permits approvals pre-mass unemployment here to when the the most ever permits were approved. After this record approval of permits the unemployment numbers started to rise & has never dropped since. This record breaker was during plp rule in the midst of claims they were xenophobic when in reality the only phobia plp had was towards IB permit holders who they used term limits on while letting non IB permit holders go over the limits & stay here while their permit was renewed.

        • JD says:

Tommy you must have been burning up the Immigration hotline with all those immigration infractions. I only recall the Grotto Bay matter, could you refresh my memory on the others?

“the proof is glaringly obvious when anyone looks at the statistics of permits approvals pre-mass unemployment here to when the the most ever permits were approved”

So what I think you are saying is that an increase in permit approvals led to mass unemployment? Well given somewhere between 2000 – 4000 expats left the island in the last four years, we should all be good right?

          • Tommy Chong says:

I’ll admit I did use the immigration hotline but nothing came out of it. Maybe this is because the ones I reported were not American like the Grotto Bay matter or British like the guy who spray painted cars. It seems that some people can have a permit as a cleaner & then once its up stay on island & become a cashier at a gas station restaurant. I guess it boils down to who you know when it comes to immigration.

The 2000 – 4000 expats you pointed out were mainly IB workers which I did mention already above were the main target of plp. I also did mention that most of the unemployed here are not IB material so there has been no offset just replacement. You’re theory is irrelevant because there are still over 2000 permit workers here but less than half of them work for IB.

            • Sandy Bottom says:

I can see it now. Tommy phoning the immigration hotline about his latest “data” that hundreds and hundreds of foreigners are being employed at xyz hotel. They listen, put the phone down, and say “it’s that racist nutcase again”.

What the Minister said, if you read the whole article, was the absolute truth Tommy. The PLP ruined the frikkin economy, but they don’t want to hear that. They don’t want to be held responsible for what they were doing 8months ago, yet their supporters come on here and demand apologies about things happenning 60 years ago.

              • Tommy Chong says:

At least we can agree on one thing PLP did ruin the economy. They ruined it through many means & one of them was by approving too many work permits while unemployment was on a rise. No one in immigration is calling me a nutcase because they are aware of what goes on. Why wouldn’t they be when they are the ones who approve permits just like plp ran the government by allowing friends & family to bypass laws put in place.

  8. Paradise Reclaimed says:

Look up Pastor Milner on the Zimmerman case on YouTube. Some blacks are tired of all the hate generated, for the sake of hate, by their own people. Lets just move on, all of us, together toward a common goal. Peace. Prosperity. Liberty. Happy C Match!

    • Concerned says:

      AMEN

    • JD says:

      I’ll second that AMEN

    • Toodle-oo says:

If some blacks are tired of the hate being generated by their own just imagine how whites feel.

oh, I forgot , it’s whites that have the problem and they’re somehow causing all of this.

    • Mazubo says:

That’s the problem, your talking about PEACE, never without equal rights and justice. Prosperity for who when black people have been fighting for years to get Prosperous and fighting for Liberty and you would be the first ones to complain when we take to the streets to demand what we deserve. That’s why we can have a Happy Cup Match because Black People refused to do any work to celebrate their (so called Emancipation)and for over one hundred years it was finally excepted to be official. So I don’t care about Pastor Milner and a handful of blacks that are tired of the hate ,who created the hate. So it there’s no way (WE CAN MOVE ON,ALL OF US TOGETHER TOWARD A COMMON GOAL). A PROBLEM HAS BEEN CREATED SO DEAL WITH IT, and stop burying your heads in the sand. The Johnny Barns mentality don’t work no more. SORRY CHARLIE !!!! LMAO

      • Paradise Reclaimed says:

        Watch the good Pastor, hater.

      • Toodle-oo says:

In my neighborhood I have on all sides black families who live in very nice houses that they actually own. Many have posh boats. They nearly all have nice flash new cars. Many of them sent their children to private schools and they are now successful business people and lawyers. They take very fancy trips and often , not cruises down south to visit their family.

NONE of the above do I have or do, and none of us are bi***ing either.

Maybe you need to speak to them and find out what it is that they’re doing and why you’re still struggling and angry.

Maybe we can learn a few things from Johnny Barnes .

      • Raaz says:

Why do you think you deserve anything? Your dead enslaved ancestors deserve reparations from dead slave owners. Get an education, get a job, then you get what you deserve you f-cking moron. I know plenty of successful black people and plenty of unsuccessful white people so any argument you give is nonsense.

        • Mazubo says:

Such hostility did I strike a nerve. LMAO, for your information smart a** I have an education and a good job. So you say my dead ancestors deserve reparations from dead slave owners , so I guess the wealth from the dead slave owners went to the grave with them , I don’t think so MORON the dead slave owners descendants(friends and family) benefited and still are for generations from so called legal theft. Even though you may know plenty of successful black people they know their place in this racist society, and that shows you how resilient of a people we are , we started the monopoly game in jail while you went around the board 4 times buying up the real estate and we got our chance to get out and we get real estate too ,woopdy doo, Its still a colonialist ,racist world where people of color are trying to fit in MORON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

        • Mazumbo says:

Such hostility did I strike a nerve. So you say my enslaved ancestors deserve reparations from dead slave owners, so I guess the wealth from the dead slave owners went to the grave with them, I don’t think so Moron, their descendants(friends and family) benefited and are still benefiting for GENERATIONS. And for your information I have an education and good job. And the successful black people you know, KNOW their place in this racist society and to show how resilient we are we started the Monopoly game in jail while you went around the board 4 times buying up the real estate and when we got our chance to get out we bought real estate too WOOPDY DOO ,that doesn’t negate the fact that this is still a Colonialist racist society where people of color are trying to fit in MORON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. Nuffin but da Truth says:

who cares what the plp think!

    • Victor says:

That’s the problem – the PLP leadership do not think, they just help themselves – never mind the rest of us.

  10. Truth is killin' me... says:

I’m tired of all the crack, crack, crackity crack as well Senator Rabain! Sort it out pronto!!

  11. Raymond Ray says:

Mr. Diallo Rabain is attempting to add fuel to a fire that doesn’t exist.
It’s a real shame to hear you complain about someone who’d expressed their feelings towards what once was. I’ll say it again , “life is like driving in a car, we have a large windshield in front and a rear window as well; I do often tell others that we are to use the rear view mirror to see where we had been but to only glance at it from time to time, not to focus on the “mirror” otherwise we will crash…without any doubt.”

    • Tommy Chong says:

“Mr. Diallo Rabain is attempting to add fuel to a fire that doesn’t exist.”

Is that supposed to mean you believe racism doesn’t exist?

You need to have felt it to know it Raymond & I doubt you have ever felt it.

      • Zombie Apocalypse says:

Tommy, when you’re making racist statements about asians, is that different somehow?

        • Tommy Chong says:

If I make a statement about italians it doesn’t mean I’m making a statement about all europeans it is what it is a statement about italians not all europeans. Stop trying to spin my points because besides for one nationality there is a minuscule percentage of any other asians here. This nationality has a book boasting over 2000 of it’s nationals are in Bermuda & had it sitting in their section at the market place for purchase. Ask any Portuguese Bermudian how long it took for them to have this many nationals in Bermuda & I guarantee the answer will be a far longer time span than this nationalities short decade. It’s not racism it’s simple mathematics & math doesn’t translate in ethnicity just numbers & numbers don’t lie. I have nothing against asians at all & in fact have visited many places in asia & met many people & learnt there are massive differences between nationalities in asia & many would be insulted to be lumped all into one category & some would even see this as racism. So who is racist me who sees the difference between a Japanese & Chinese person or you who lumps all asians together?

          • Sandy Bottom says:

Oh this is great. Look what racist prick this guy is.

            • Tommy Chong says:

Comparing the influx of a certain nationality getting work permits in a country in a state of economic decline & unemployment is not racism its sociology you drip.

              • Sandy Bottom says:

It’s racism. You complain about racism but you are a racist prick.

                • Tommy Chong says:

Then you must think sociologist are racist for pointing out statistics.

This cupmatch I suggest you take time to learn about the culture & history of the country you live in so that you may come to the realization that others have worked hard & suffered in the past to make Bermuda what it once was & by law & by right their descendants deserve a chance to make a living in their own homeland.

        • Tommy Chong says:

You’re the one grouping all asians together when I didn’t so who’s the racist one. Do you think Irish want to be considered the same as those from England or Israelis considered Arabs. Savy?

          • Sandy Bottom says:

You only make racist statements about asians who live here, is that what you mean?

Or is it that you’re only racist about ones who you think might be from one particular country.

You’re a frikkin dirty racist. Scumbag.

            • Tommy Chong says:

Neither, I was comparing the influx of a certain nationality getting work permits in Bermuda to the timing of a state of economic decline & unemployment. This is sociology not racism & its obvious you have no knowledge of Bermuda’s sociological history from your blather.

Nevertheless, you were one of the posters condoning the profiled shooting of an unarmed black teen. I bet you wish we had a, “stand your ground” law here so you could deal with all of us isn’t that right you proctologist dream?

              • Sandy Bottom says:

You go after one specific race and nationality whenever you get the chance. All based on your racial hatred. We all know what makes you Tommy.

                • Tommy Chong says:

Not all asians are of the same nationality you fruitloop. There have been Chinese & Japanese here for years but they don’t hold the mass of permits this one nationality has gained in such a short period of time. It could have been Dominicans I was pointing out if they held this many permits but they don’t. It’s not a matter of race it’s a matter of statistics that it seems you are too dense to grasp. I guess you must tear about every form that asks you to fill out your nationality & accuse the ones who gave it to you of being racist.

You are accusing me of racism for stating statistics but as mentioned before you are fine with the racist murder of a black person. You’re the one who hates blacks & justifies the murder of blacks through stereotypes. I’ve never pardoned the killing of any race & wouldn’t because I’m not the racist you are.

                  • Zombie Apocalypse says:

So if someone were, for example, to make comments about “all these Nigerians and Jamaicans over-populating our country and taking our jobs”, that would be fine with you, because that would just be making a statistical point. Is that right?

                    • Tommy Chong says:

People do say things about Jamaicans in Bermuda & guess what most of them who do are black Bermudians. There are blacks who make racist statements about other blacks but these are directed towards physical characteristics like a mixed black having prettier hair. Making a comment about a nationalities immigration trends is not racism its an observation like saying there are more blacks in westgate then whites. You can’t call statistics racist because reality gets clouded when you do. Someone may get offended by a statement but that doesn’t always mean they were the subject of racism. I do recognize that members of plp have made claims of racism when there was no real racist remark made but others have done the same to a plp minister & shot down valid points he had.

Hopefully you aren’t insinuating I typed all of a group of nationals because I never did. I may have said some or many but this is different from all. I also never said anything about overpopulating & wouldn’t because I’m aware that Bermuda was overpopulate well before these nationals came. Another point is that I never placed full blame on these Nationals as I placed most blame on our own immigration, government & employers. I full well know these nationals are here to make their lives better & can respect their strive for self preservation. My only gripe towards these nationals is towards the ones who know that them & their boss are flaunting immigration laws & this same gripe goes towards any nationality who does the same regardless of their race.

                    • Zombie Apocalypse says:

You know full well Tommy that such a comment (as in my example) would be regarded as being racist, rightly so. It wouldn’t be accepted as a ‘statistical obervation’. Making a statistical observation is one thing, but you don’t really do that. You make up “facts” in your head about Pink Beach, or Buzz, or Philippinos, and you use these “facts” to assert that life is unfair to Bermudians. But actually, you never have any facts. You make up stats. You always pick on Philippinos, always hiding behind some twisted logic about how “that is a nationality not a race”.

                    • sunny side up says:

i am assuming tommy chong is unemployed or on holiday this week as he does nothing but post on bernews all day. if he is employed, his employer is being ripped right off.

      • Raaz says:

When was the last time you were discriminated against (because of race, not because your an idiot)?

        • Tommy Chong says:

You discriminated against me just now by insinuating that I’m an idiot without even knowing me. Even so I’m not phased because opinion is the medium between knowledge & ignorance.

          • Raaz says:

Well now I know for sure that you’re an idiot because you clearly didn’t understand what I said. And clever little quips will only convince other idiots that you are smart :)

Back to my point, you couldn’t respond with indication that you are discriminated against because of race.

    • Tramsparency for Real!! says:

Ray Raymond, stop sleeping again, and come to grips to the realization that Mr Richards spoke very silly and out of turn on the matter. He got up out of his seat in the House of Assembly to just “Spin OBA rhetoric” rather than remain in his seat if he was not willing to make a worthwhile contribution to “Doing the people’s business in a way which is more productive”.

Mr Richards was attempting to show his EGO, like your AG and Mr. Moniz. This silly immature behaviours by the OBA tells many of us there is NO change in the OBA, they are acting like the old UBP party.

It is now easier for folks to see what a “Real Surrogate” looks like, as Mr Richards provide us with a real demonstrated of one by his actions in the house of Assembly. He was foolish and lack any creditability in the matter. He also lied about talking to folks on Sommersall Road, as many have not even seen him, maybe all except one. He was up there talking nothing but pure nonsense.

Folks are becoming very disappointed in the OBA, and their poor political tactics and level of maturity as a party. If this is the best they can offer Bermuda, than we are more doomed than ever before.

      • E$ says:

nope you just exaggerate and spout out nonsense and bulls*** in the hopes people will believe you, we’re smarter than that! go lay down its past your bed time

      • Raaz says:

Why do you f-@king care what they are saying. They are stopping this country from sinking. But since you are a PLP supporter your tiny mind clearly just believes politics is a soap opera…

  12. Victor says:

When the race baiting, minority bashing politics of Ewart Brown and his gang are taken into account, Rabain does not a have a leg to stand on – and Thank You Mr. Richards for having the courage to say what most of us think. Indeed, Rabain’s comments just proves what the Minister said.

  13. watching says:

That tirade by Minister Richards was totally unbecoming of a Minister. and offensive to the community.

And for Minister Fahy’s response to be the usual “well the PLP did it too”…is getting a bit old.

That has become the standard response. It is a bit pathetic.

    • frank says:

I think that minister Richards had a breakdown and should remove himself from the house and take mark with him

  14. LaVerne Furbert says:

The worst thing about Minister Richards’ tirade was that the Deputy Speaker allowed him enough rope to hang himself, and hang himself he did. I wonder what the Howard University Alumni Association thinks of his tirade.

    • watching says:

The Deputy Speaker is terribly biased…but then again so seems to be the Speaker.

    • jt says:

I wonder what they’d think of your comments over the years LaVerne?

  15. Sandgrownan says:

Jesus, these guys are professional offendees, they are determined to be offended. I dare not speculate at the motivation for that….

  16. Bermyman says:

Brilliant speech, this man should be the next Premier!

  17. Cavello Bay says:

I think the PLP have selective memories! Does REDNECK and HOUSE ****** ring a bell! Where was the TIRADE then Mrs. Furbert!! The only thing the PLP know is black and white! Where’s the MONEY GONE PLP! Bermudians will never forget this economic failure, until U (plp) helps us get out of it, that is the only way i will EVER vote for u again! Until then u are all deadbeats!

  18. The Ombudsman makes a statement and says:

hmmmmm makes a negative statement about his own people…gets white man to support his statement…well done Minister Sylvan Richards well done

  19. Alvin Williams says:

Howard University is some what of a intellectual capital for the African/American community. I wonder if OBA minister Richards completed his studies there and if he did how did he escape the influnces of a Afro-centric viewpoint: since he seems to have such distain for so-called black points of view and history. But than Bermuda seems to have to lead in producing Euopean Clones; meaning black people who can only see the world through a Euro-centic lens. But if the minister felt that way; why did he waste his money going to Howard University; when he could have gone to Harward or some other predominant white educational insititution where he might have been quite at home with it’s Euro-centric viewpoint.

    • Raaz says:

You are living the ‘Eurocentric’ lifestyle in Bermuda, and it’s pretty good, so get over yourself.

    • Sandy Bottom says:

To translate what you wrote Alvin, you’re surprised that after attending Howard Minister Richards holds balanced rational views, rather than anti-white hate. And you think he might have fit in better at Harvard, presumably somwhat like that other Harvard graduate, Barak Obama.

    • jt says:

I suspect you did not graduate from Howard Mr. Williams.

  20. former Liars says:

What a courageous man to come clean like that….Nuffield respect Mr. minister!

  21. sunny side up says:

will we ever have a BERMUDIAN point of view that is not labelled ‘black’ or ‘white’ (or should i say darker brown and lighter brown…i am not black, and i am not white, but that sure is polarizing language….) ??

does a person from bermuda who happens to have darker brown skin have more in common with his fellow bermudian who has lighter brown skin or does he have more in common with someone from elsewhere in the universe who also happens to have darker brown skin? if you answered the latter, shame on you.

the only thing that should be separating us is whether we support somerset or st georges. and even that is clearly all in good fun…. we do not have time for the negativity people. we are among the luckiest people in the galaxy just to LIVE here! look around you. people have problems everywhere, but at least we get to have ours in one of the most glorious places ever created.

  22. Wow hearing this from a black politician, and Howard educated, must be a slap in the face to most blacks and some whites, but i take it with a grain of salt??like most M.Ps they are always sticking there feet in there mouths!!What would have been the reaction if it was a white M P ??The sooner the older generation dies of with there hatered from both sides , the better the world will be??or perhaps only my dreams????

  23. Raymond Ray says:

Tommy Chong & Tramsparency for Real, both of you sound as if you’re one of the same. Min. Sylvan Richard spoke the truth and folks like you lot can’t handle the truth…

  24. Clarity without bias! says:

Senator Rabaine really, really needs to cap it! He’s up against maturity and truth. I’m also black and am sick of hearing all the blackity black crap the PLP espouse. PLP did not take care of anyone but themselves!!! Minister Sylvan Richards was ON POINT!!! Please grow up Senator Rabaine, and speak with maturity and wisdom, if not sit back and listen to your elders who will tell you this is not about YOU trying to sound smart with no substance or real experiences. Simply put, Minister Sylvan Richards said, I can identify being black, yes we went to an ivy league black university, but we have to be truthful and have integrity. If the PLP or you Senator Rabaine, were about “black” empowerment or enrichment, why did you not stop the blatant misuse of public funds that far too many blacks (and others) are now having to pay the consequences for. Gosh we are sick of hearing the pettiness!!! If you really want some credibility then start to address what has to be done to save ‘your kid” and Bermuda’s kids, from the missteps of your PLP government, if you want them to have a future in Bermuda!!

  25. Robert says:

Damn, i dare not comment on this issue….. opps too late, white bermuda would love for to subject of emancipation and slavery to just go away, so woukd i, but it must be discussed. In order for us to heal we must confront our deamons. The civil rights movement must not be allowed to be trivialized by anyone, black or white and to suggest that MP Richards comments were not offensive is just plain ignorance. He must, as a black man in todays bermuba should be made to apologize.

    • Raaz says:

No, you are wrong, and this isn’t a matter of opinion. Neither the perpetrators nor the victims are alive any more. Blacks aren’t slaves any more, and whites don’t want to enslave them. So what do you want to change?

  26. Tony Stark says:

I really wish we as Bermudians would stop all this white and black crap.

Yes I’m aware you make $150,000 plus in the private sector with a IB company and also are getting paid $120,000 plus as a part time government Minister.

Minister Richards don’t get caught up being a DUMP cocky A $$.

    • Tramsparency for Real!! says:

So he would do anything or say anything to keep making the money, the heck with his people and value system. A real surrogate he is.

  27. God 1st says:

He is eating bread crumbs from the oligarchy’s hands.

  28. Black on Black Crime says:

Mr. Richards has broken a code that Michael Fahy has no clue about!
As such his defense falls on deaf ears. It is the black community that voted the OBA in who is offended. It is the slim margin of hope the is being eroded by these “house-N” which is most disturbing. Lets get to the core of it. We know that some blacks cozy up to whites for political and economic advantage. Often these are self-hating Negroes who publically decry black struggles and who don’t appreciate the existing struggles that racism is responsible for. Mr. Richards does not distance himself from such people with his sell-out remarks that are designed to signal to white people that he is a safe negro. Safe Negroes don’t become that way overnight. This is not a one of statement. It reflects this core beliefs and long cherished values. “Going to Howard does not a conscious man make”. He simply went to that school and talked the talk but did not believe the message or grow to respect his history or he would never have said that. Can you imagine a Jew saying anything like that out their history…NO! This is a result of deep seated self hate which we always suspected was behind the NEW UBP! We trusted Craig and his new possie because we did believe that they understood the “blackety black black struggle”. NOW WE UNDERSTAND! Once bitten twice shy. Micheal Fahy should not try to blow this over. FIrst of all Richards as a black man needs to talk to his community about his comments. It looks most insulting to have this white man come to the defense of black on black crime!

  29. God 1st says:

Sylvan Richards is in need of minister dunkley’s bath cloth so that he can wash his face.
