Videos/Results: Island Games FIG Gymnastics

July 17, 2013

The Bermuda women’s gymnastics team competed in the FIG round at the NatWest Island Games yesterday [July 16] at the National Training Center in St. Davids. The ladies competed for individual medals in the vault, bars, beam, and floor, as well as a medal for the all-around total.

While the Isle of Man dominated the competition, Bermuda had several strong routines and won a bronze medal. The team was off to a good start on balance beam, sticking 5 out of 6 routines. Tabytha Hofheins earned the sole medal for the team (3rd, 11.65), Sadia Wilson was just behind her (4th, 11.45) and Zantae Dill finished 6th with an 11.1.

The team then moved to floor exercise and was led by Sydney Mason, who earned an 11.1 for 6th place. Wilson tumbled her way into 8th place with a 10.6 and Gabby Vincent was just behind her with a 10.5. Unfortunately Zantae Dill was injured during the warm-up round for floor and was unable to continue with her competition.

On the third event, vaulting, Bermuda showed impressive amplitude and performed even better than Sunday evening’s team competition. Hofheins was just .05 out of the medals, with a 12.9 for 4th place. Vincent finished in 8th place with a 12.675 and Mason was in 10th with a 12.625. With the scores so tight – 1st through 14th place were all within 1.00 – the gymnasts had to not only perform a dynamic vault but show perfect form in order to be in the medal hunt.

Bermuda finished up on uneven bars, where Wilson notched the team’s highest score of 9.05 for 5th place. Vincent was not far behind in 9th place with an 8.15. In the all-around standing, Wilson, Hofheins, Vincent, and Mason finished in 8th – 11th places (43.9, 42.3, 41.85, and 40.55) respectively. Clara James also competed for Team Bermuda and earned a 39.35, with her highest score coming on vault (12.6).

The top three all-around finishers were Grace Harrison of IOM for the gold (48.75), Bonita Mia Hurmer of Jersey for the silver (45.4) and Nicole Burns of IOM for the bronze (44.95).

The gymnasts return for their final day of competition, the “Set” round on Thursday, July 18th. The women compete from 9-1pm and the men will compete from 1-4pm. In the “Set” round, the gymnasts perform compulsory exercises on each piece. They must display a high level of perfection and artistry in order to earn a place on the medal podium.
