Argentina, Lions Win On Day #1 Of Rugby Classic

A large crowd turned out at the National Sports Centre last night [Nov 9] as the World Rugby Classic got underway. The opening night saw two matches take place, with Argentina defeating Canada, and the Classic Lions defeating Italy.

Argentina 33 – Canada 20

Canada took the lead in the 4th minute when Derek Daypuck kicked a penalty to give them a 3 – 0 lead. Five minutes later Argentina took a 7 – 3 lead this after Juan Campero scored a try and Federico Jordan Todeschini kicked the conversion.

Daypuck kicked another penalty to pull Canada within one after 13 minutes, but once again five minutes later Campero scored his second try of the game for Argentina and the Conversion was missed as they led 12-6.

In the 25th minute Juan Pablo Angelillo scored a try and Todeschini kicked the conversion to extend the lead to 19-6. Campero scored his third try of the match and Leandro Lobrauco kicked the conversion as Argentina went ahead 26-6.

Canada scored a try in the 49th minute after an interception in their half that saw two players ride tackles before Aaron Mittler went over for the try. and when Daypuck kicked the Conversion the score went to 26-13.

Three minutes later Todeschini went over for an Argentina try and he kicked the conversion to extend the lead to 33-13, Canada did score one more try in the 58th minute when Dan Harlow scored and kicked the conversion, however they fell 33-20.

Classic Lions 21 – Italy 0

The Classic Lions took a 7-0 lead in the 11th minute when Mark Blair went over for a Try and Jon Petrie added the Conversion. Gareth Wyatt doubled the Classic Lions lead with a try in the 21st minute along with the Conversion from Petrie made it 14-0.

Wyatt all but ended the game with a try in the 45th minute that saw Ewan Dowes kick the conversion to make the final score Classic Lions 21 Italy 0.
