Trey Swan Memorial Tournament Underway
The Trey D. Swan Memorial Junior Tennis Tournament at the WER Joell Tennis Stadium in Pembroke started on Friday [Oct 10] and will run until October 17. This year represents the 10th year of this Tournament.
Sponsors for this tournament include Cadbury [BGA] and Langton Tennis Club [Brent Smith, Coach/Director of Manders’ Island Tennis Academy], in addition to the Trey D Swan Memorial Fund.
Speaking about Trey a family spokesperson said, “Trey Dion Swan graduated from The Berkeley Institute in June 2000. Following his graduation, Trey traveled to Nancy, France as an international exchange student with an organization called Youth for Understanding.
“It was there he completed his post-graduate year at Lycee Jacques Callot. While in Nancy, Trey lived with a host family, Professor Roger & Dr Francois Viry-Babel. Trey returned to Bermuda fluent in written and spoken French.
“Trey was an avid tennis player who enjoyed the sport and traveled to Van der Meer University in South Carolina with his coaches, Brent Smith and McAllister [Mackie] Burgess to do skills training. His coaches encouraged him in this sport.
“Trey’s immediate goals were, to complete a business degree, build his own home and qualify as a tennis coach for juniors. Trey was a Duke of Edinburgh Bronze and Silver Medalist and received Merit Badges for both expeditions. He completed his Silver expedition in Aberdovey, Wales.
“Trey was a summer student at the Bank of Bermuda [now HSBC Bermuda] for 4 summers and worked construction on Saturday’s with a family friend. When he died, Bank of Bermuda flew their flags at half mask, an honor normally reserved for Board members and senior management of the Bank. Our family friend named his home after Trey, “Trey’s Vision”.
“Trey’s parents describe him as an outgoing, very responsible, goal centered young man. He set personal goals and then went about achieving them. At the time of his untimely passing, at 19 years old, he was a freshman at Bermuda College. Trey was a baptized, Christian and an active member of Worldwide Church of God. He was kindhearted, loved life, loved people and loved tennis.
“Cadbury, [BGA], has been the main sponsor for this tournament since its inception and Mr Brent Smith, Director of Manders’ Island Tennis Academy has done an excellent job of spearheading this tournament since its inception, in addition to funding from the Trey D Swan Memorial Fund.”
