Mayho, Williams Wins IBC Championship Race
The Bermuda Bicycle Association held the final championship race of the 2014 season this morning [Nov 16] in Hamilton, which saw Dominique Mayho and Zoenique Williams retain their titles as male and female national champions while teenagers Tyler Smith and Tristan Narraway won the junior boy and junior girl titles for the first time.
Mayho and Shannon Lawrence separated themselves from the rest of the field less than half the way through their 55 minute ordeal and gradually stretched their lead over the remaining laps in the 30 lap contest.
In the sprint for third place David McComas bested Mark Hatherley for the final podium spot. In the women’s race, Williams and Karen Bordage also enjoyed a paired breakaway which saw the two ride the majority of the race together before the final sprint down Front Street.
Williams was able to make a quick jump ahead of Bordage and then hang on for the win. Julia Hawley rounded out the podium from which Nicole Mitchell was noticeably absent. Mitchell is fighting the last stages of a cold which should be cleared before she and Williams head to Mexico later this week for the CAC Games cycling road race along with Mayho.
Tyler Smith continued to impress with a strong win this morning but he was challenged by Matthew Oliviera the entire way. Kaden Hopkins took third place making the category a clear sweep for the trio of Winners Edge riders. Narraway’s victory was just a whisker ahead of Alyssa Rowse and Rebecca Harrison in third. Full results by category are attached.
Earlier in the day the BBA hosted racing for their younger regular racers and the popular Pee Wee races. More than 100 budding cyclists ranging from 3 to 12 years old raced courses of varying distances along Front Street with legions of parents trotting behind in support. The beautiful weather, scenic backdrop and generosity of sponsor IBC made for a great morning of bicycle racing in town.
Local racing now shifts to the off-road scene with the start of mountain bike racing on November 30th at the Arboretum. Organized by the Fat Tire Massive club and sponsored by Riihiluoma’s Flying Colours, racing is open to all abilities. More information on these events can be found at fattiremassive.com
