Senator Alexis Swan To Step Down From Senate

January 30, 2015

Alexis SwanPremier Michael Dunkley advised this evening [Jan 30] that Senator Alexis Swan will step down as a Government Senator before the next session of the Senate, which is scheduled to start on Wednesday, February 18.

A statement from the Government said, “The move is in keeping with adjustments to the Government’s Parliamentary team that began last month with the realignment of Cabinet responsibilities.

“Sen. Swan was appointed Senator following the December 2012 Election. She has served as a Junior Minister for Community, Culture and Sports and was a founding member of the young Bermudians group Future Bermuda Alliance. In the 2012 Election, she ran as a One Bermuda Alliance candidate for Constituency 24, Warwick South East.

“Premier the Hon. Michael Dunkley said he wanted to use the Senate change to open opportunity for another person to serve the country, and will make an appointment in due course.”

Sen. Swan said: “I have enjoyed my time in the Senate. I have learned a lot – seeing how government works and appreciating the challenges of getting things done for public benefit.

“These past three years, getting involved in both politics and government, has been a time of personal growth and new confidence for me. I wouldn’t have traded it for anything – helping to serve my Country and people.

“I am fine with being part of the Premier’s realignment, in creating the opportunity for someone else to serve in the Senate.”

Premier Dunkley said Sen. Swan, who works as an insurance executive, would continue to serve on a variety of Government boards to continue her exposure to other aspects of public life.

“Alexis has done a great job in a very challenging environment,” the Premier said. “I have been in many meetings with her and am impressed by her passion to expand the voices of younger generations and women in the decisions and deliberations of Government.

“She has also worked continuously to make sure the people of Warwick South East have a voice in government. I admire her activism, her spirit and her commitment to public life, and appreciate her decision making it possible for someone else to have a chance to serve.

“Alexis will continue to serve the people of her constituency. I regard her as one of the next generation of future leaders and it is my desire that she be part of our team in the next General Election.”

The Premier intends to select a new Senate candidate prior to the mid-February resumption of Parliament.

    • sonso says:

Why? Because the unions do not have THIS government in their back pocket like the last?

      Yea, that would be why!

      • ETPHONEHOME says:

Frankly its goes beyond which party. BOTH have FAILED.

        • umok says:

Bermuda is sinking. The outlook doesn’t look good either. Unemployment may cause high stress levels which could lead to further sickness and crime. If we don’t reverse the downward trend our government may not be able to pay the interest on the debt and our island will collapse economically.

We need to stop thinking OBA vs PLP and start thinking BERMUDA. There has to be away to turn things around. We the PEOPLE need to fix the issues not government. We keep looking for government to fix the issues but they can’t. They can only change policy and that has limitations. Policy isn’t the panacea to our problems nor was it the reason behind our economic growth in 1998-2008.

We need to come together and focus primarily on trade, business and tourism. We need ideas, innovation, and people to invest in Bermuda.

We can fix tourism and get International Business going. We just need ideas from everyone collectively. We should not sit around and wait for the OBA to come up with the magical plan. The OBA nor the PLP can fix our situation.

    • Just wondering says:

please explain why they should do so? surely not for having the guts to deal with the national debt that the PLP created? but do please state the reasoning behind this statement

  4. Dee says:

Parliamentary adjustments they call it. Who didn’t see this coming.
All the best to Miss. Swan

  5. J Starling says:

I wish Ms Swan all the best with her career, and look forward to see who her replacement in the Senate will be.

I’m sure she’s learned a lot from this experience, and hopefully, should she come back to front-line politics, I hope she can draw on the experience she’s had in the Senate these last few years.

    • ETPHONEHOME says:

Most definitely. She meant well. Just better hope the One Bunch of Axxes dont loose the next election. Cause you know she best cross the floor if she hope to survive the next PLP reign. Out goes surrogate #….how many is it now?

  6. Terry says:

    I need a rum.
Get rid of the Insurance Executive and bring in a wall sitter.

Only a few will get it.

    Mike. We need to talk

Does the new Senator get a furlough day?

  7. Leopard dont Change their spots says:

Come on girl…get with it…they used you….nothing new!

  8. Truth is killin' me... says:

I saw 5,000 people being used this week at the detriment of our children and the rest of our island…nothing new Leopard!

    • Shogun says:

You can’t stand to see people standing up strong to fight against wrong!!!! It’s just the beginning. ENOUGH is EMOUGH

      • Build a Better Bermuda says:

What good is standing strong now, if you destroy the future for our children, what you see as a fight against wrong, is more like a fight against the reality that we now live in. If we do not fix the state of government finances now, some foreign creditor will own our children’s Bermuda tomorrow.

    • frank says:

what you saw was 5000 people standing up for justice against a wicket uncaring government and that’s the truth

      • tee says:

Correction it was more than 5000…

      • Build a Better Bermuda says:

That would be the wicked uncaring government that was left with no money to pay them, or the wicked uncaring government that was trying to keep them all employed. Or perhaps it is the wicked uncaring government that has been trying to restful ate an economy that was in free fall or the wicked uncaring government that actually came up with a long term plan and goals to make sure foreign creditors like the IMF don’t own our children’s country. We cannot afford to be short sighted when the security of the country our children are to inherit is in peril.

        • Build a Better Bermuda says:

Damn spell auto correct, ‘restful ate’ should be ‘resuscitate’

      • Toodle-oo says:

*what you saw was 5000 people standing up for justice against a wicket uncaring government and that’s the truth*

No , what you really saw was 5000 people who do not understand in the slightest …..

How very serious our financial situation is and that it is not going to be over in a few short years.

That the private sector has been suffering and loosing jobs/working hours and money since 2007

That because of the contraction in the private sector gov’t intake of taxes (to pay them) is vanishing .

That a few furlough days will actually protect their jobs .

That they don’t understand the difference between furlough time and layoffs.

And finally , that gov’t actually does care about them .

    • Mockingjay says:

You saw 5,000 people who said, Enough is Enough and more would’ve followed if those Dreamers would’ve tried to play Hardball.
Were you this concerned when the children were out for a week during the Hurricane?
And you want to talk about being used, don’t forget your new Minister of W&E and your Senator that just stepped down.

Sen. Alexis Swan here’s something to ponder…

  20. Terry says:

    Bite me.

    Truth is a bitbeach eh?

  21. Monica Jones says:

Ms Swan is incredibly dedicated to her country and constituents. Wherever she goes she’ll bring her love of country, dedication and commitment.

Sometimes taking a step back, in the long run is a way to take a step ahead.

    • Valirie Marcia Akinstall says:

And I would guess that you are her replacement, Ms Jones.

With mirrored ideologies, comments that straddle a very conservative view point and a legal mind that understands the technical drafting of complex legislation. Moreover, the ability to define contentious issues and to fine tune the issues.

With the realignment of Bermuda’s economy the Senate will need those who demonstrate the ability to communicate the Government’s hot-wired issues most effectively, and you will be challenged.

I am almost certain that if asked you would accept, Ms Jones, making the OBA Senators much stronger and wiser in their representations of all stakeholders in Bermuda.

Last and certainly not least, I wish Ms Swan the best.

    • Truth Teller says:

Senator Swan was incredibly dedicated to herself (full stop)!
Another person used and discarded as her wealthy white patrons found out quickly enough that she just did not have what it took to be effective politically in the Senate
      and beyond.

But what would one expect of a party that requires black faces at any cost in order to win elections.

      So predictable.
