27-Yr-Old Johnathan Darrell Dies After Stabbing
[Updated with audio + video + statements. Police confirm that 27-year-old Johnathan Darrell of Sandys has died from an "apparent stabbing" after a "major melee" took place in the parking lot of Ice Queen with a "number of people involved."]
At sometime around 4.00am this morning [Aug 22] there was some form of an incident in the area of Ice Queen in Paget. The police are on scene and crime scene tape is visible. Further details are limited at this time, however we will update as able.
Update 5.20am: Police Media Manager Dwayne Caines said the police responded to a “major melee” at around 4.15am, and a 27-year-old man was transported to hospital and he has been pronounced dead, with the police saying they believe he died of an “apparent stabbing”.
Traffic is being diverted in the area, and we will update with the full video of the police statement as able.

Update 6.12am: A police spokesperson said, “Police and first responders attended a report of an incident that took place at Rural Hill Plaza outside of Ice Queen in Paget on Saturday, 4:15am.
“Details are still unfolding but it appears that a major melee took place in the parking lot with a number of people involved.
“As a result, a 27 year old male from Southampton was taken to King Edward Memorial Hospital with an apparent stab wound to his chest. Unfortunately, the victim was pronounced dead at 4:28am Saturday.
“The area has now been cordoned off and an investigation into this incident is now underway. There were upwards of 30 plus individuals in the area at the time and police are appealing for anyone who was involved in the altercation or anyone who may have seen the incident to contact police on 295-0011 or the confidential Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-8477.
“No further information will be given until the next of kin has been notified.”
Update 6.41am: The police advised the motoring public that traffic has been diverted in the area onto Harbour Road.
“It should also be noted, bus service will be affected as presently no traffic is flowing on Middle Road in Paget and that impacts all buses travelling in a westerly direction,” a police spokesperson said.

The loss of any life, particularly one with so many years ahead of them, is a loss not just to his family and loved ones, but to our country as well.
“We hope that the perpetrator of this brutal attack is brought to justice and that the grieving family of the victim is comforted during this horrific time. Our prayers and support are with you.”
Update Aug 23, 6.47am: The police have identified the victim as 27 year old Johnathan Darrell of Sandys.
A police spokesperson said, “Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 27 year old Johnathan Darrell of Fairhaven Lane in Sandys who died as a result of an incident that took place on Saturday August 22nd at 4:15am at the Rural Hill Plaza in Paget just outside of Ice Queen.
“It appears that a major melee took place in the parking lot with a number of people involved. As a result, Johnathan Darrell from Sandys was taken to King Edward Memorial Hospital with an apparent stab wound to his chest. Unfortunately, the victim was pronounced dead at 4:28 am on Saturday.
“A family liaison officer has been assigned to the family and the Bermuda Police Service extends our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
“Police are appealing for any persons involved in the incident or anyone who may have any information regarding this incident to please call Acting Inspector Jason Smith on 247-1218 or email him on jsmith2@bps.bm. You also may call the independent and confidential Crimestoppers hotline on 800-8477.
“No further information will be given on the incident until the press conference which is scheduled to take place at 11am on Monday.
