Police: Increase In Chain Snatching Incidents

September 10, 2015

The past few weeks have seen a “marked increase” in the number of chain snatches — mainly in Pembroke and Devonshire — with the culprits riding alongside motorcyclists and snatching the chains from their necks, the police said today.

A police spokesperson said, “Over the last several weeks there has been a marked increase in the number of chain snatches mainly in the Pembroke and Devonshire parishes.

“The culprits are identifying riders of cycles who are openly displaying neck chains. They are then riding alongside the victims and snatching the chain from their neck and making off at speed.

“Members of the public are asked to exercise caution when wearing these items of jewelry on open display whilst riding their bike. They are also asked to be on the lookout for suspicious individuals parked on the roadside watching passing motorcyclists.

“Anyone with information on these matters is urged to come forward to assist in bringing the offenders to justice,” the police added.

  1. Truth Hurts says:

The buy gold stores while not directly related, are part of the problem. Kill the market for this stuff…

    • Jus' Wonderin' says:

You can still take it to a jeweler and get it melted down, etc…

      • Come Correct says:

Both of you, jesus take the wheel. Stop the market for gold? Ya serious though? If our dollar plumets gold will retain its value. So right there don’t be so silly… You can take it to a jeweler and still get it melted down? Bish I harden and temper steel in my yard at over 2000 degrees, I can melt gold in my back yard which then becomes untraceable. Here’s an idea. Have plain clothed police riding around with fake blind and when they bite…well have you ever had a taser to the face?

    • Anon Omus says:

Local cash for gold shops are not the problem as a lot of people will ship the gold overseas. So by shutting these business down, which you can’t don’t doesn’t solve anything. In fact it puts Bermudians out of work!

      • Come Correct says:

Don’t be a ham, you can’t ship gold overseas without a reputable company with no seizure and questions.

  2. Jinky says:

Are we really at the point of advising the public, including tourists, not to wear jewelry on ‘open display’? Where are all the cameras?

  3. Terry says:

The market is there for these culprits to pawn their stolen merchandise.

The sad part will be (even though gold is soft) when someone collides with the thief or falls off or hits another vehicle/wall after a failed attempt.
    It will happen.

Then again as a side note things can’t be that bad for the targets.
    Shalom.

    • Terry says:

Well we know now that negativity is alive and well in Bermuda.
Look at the dislikes about a common sense statement.

The trolls are out in force today and encouraged by the likes.

      Shalom.

      • Come Correct says:

So if I’m ok money wise its not ok for me to wear my gold chain? I’m not and mine looks great sitting in its original box guarded by 70lbs of teeth 24/7. No negativity you got so many dislikes because you’re saying people who can own it can’t wear it. I own gold but I don’t wear it, over 16 years of martial arts but I don’t invite trouble. Try to take the s*** I worked for and you’ll be in KEMH with me and I’ll find you.

  4. CBA says:

Bermuda needs CCTV camera’s EVERYWHERE just like England. Sad but true.

    • Terry says:

      Be productive.
Do they get everyone on “CCTV” in England?
      No.

  5. Real 1 says:

Sad ppl can’t even wear the jewelry & things they worked hard for without some envious inbical trying to steal it.

    • well says:

Don’t were it if you can’t defend it.
In some controls it’s like spitting in some face walking through struggling poor people naborhood flash your riches. And some people take it to extreme with these big chains with no sentimental value.

  6. i wonder says:

SHOULD SET UP A STING OPERATION AND CATCH THE A$$**LES!! BUT THEN THERE PARENTS PROBABLY DEFEND THEM AND SAY NOT MY CHILD OF GOD!!! SMH BEING GOING ON FOR YEARS !! SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE BEFORE SOMEONE IS KILLED AGAIN OVER A PIECE OF MATERIAL!! PLACES THAT BUY GOLD SERVE TO ENCOURAGE THESE THIEVES OPEN YOURS EYES BERMUDA!!!

  7. It's seasy says:

Why dont the Police simply have a female officer dressed as a tourist, on a rental scooter with a nice chain with a pendant that has a tracking device…then go out riding around……..simple

    • Terry says:

      Because tourist don’t do that.

      It’s a local gang thing.
      Money for drugs and habits.
      Hello……………………….

    • Come Correct says:

I’d look at that as bait. However if I saw a young male on a local bike wearing a gold chain I’d see a target. You all assume these criminals are dumb mouth breathers. They’ve perfected their craft like anyone else.

    • think says:

Guys are probably not going through the trouble to grab the average chain worn by the average person with #1 mom etc pendants. Chances are you can’t even see or reach those while riding! I would expect the preferred targets to be young males that are likely to be wearing bigger, more expensive chains.

  8. nok says:

The police are not the smart.

  9. Keepin' it Real!...4Real! says:

How the hell does one ride up close enough to grab a chain from someone’s neck, ..seriously…are you asleep ?? 9/10 times its grabbed by the passenger so at least half the bike is in front of you…If they are that close to you then you need to brake immediately assess the situation then act accordingly…I suggest that the general public put their efforts into getting involved in the solutions rather than bleating like a goat on bernews about it being the govt.s fault…I hope for any perpetrator of an assault such as this never to get caught in my Crosshairs…because I will execute with due force…I, like many other hard working but still struggling members of the public are TIRED!! YA ‘ERE ME!!.

    • Keepin' it Real!...4Real! says:

Oh I just realised and must digress…These full helmets nowadays can restrict peripheral visions as well as sound to some degree…so if you have been robbed and you wore one of these helmets I apologise for saying “are you asleep??”…but if you weren’t wearing one ..were you?

  10. you do not advise …you do not advise do not wear jewelry….you immediatly remove the problem!…Jewelry is meant to be worn….prosecute and punish…spare the rod spoil the child…or adult….you never deminish lifestyle or personal freedom…you creat an environment…at all cost…i will not live on my knees…and “YOU”…will not advise me to…entrap these ship bagage…saying that implies you can’t dolve it…i have a solution.
