Weather Services Issues ‘Severe Weather Watch’

May 5, 2016

[Updated] The Bermuda Weather Service [BWS] has issued a Severe Weather Watch valid for early this evening [May 5] through tonight, as well as a Thunderstorm Advisory valid for this evening through Friday.

A Government spokesperson said, “Residents will be aware that this afternoon the Bermuda Weather Service [BWS] issued a Severe Weather Watch, indicating that the Island is expected to experience serious weather conditions over the next two days.

“Out of caution, the Ministry of National Security is encouraging the public to be mindful of the approaching weather conditions and take the necessary precautions.

“Main elements of concern are strong gusty winds in developing thunderstorms and rainfall accumulations that could result in some localised flooding. Those in particular who reside in low lying and coastal areas are encouraged to be vigilant.

“The public is encouraged to stay abreast of local weather updates and warnings which can be followed online via www.weather.bm and on CableVision ch. 4.

“As a general reminder the public should be aware that Hurricane Season officially begins June 1, and concludes November 30.”

Updated 3.49pm: Regarding waste collection, a Government spokesperson said, “Given the strong winds forecasted for tonight and tomorrow, the Waste Management Section of the Ministry of Public Works wishes to advise the public that waste should not be placed out this evening in advance of Friday’s east-end collection.

“Loose waste bags in high winds quickly become vehicular obstacles that may lead to accidents, roadside litter and vector habitats. Please secure all waste and other loose items around your home this evening and place waste bags out for collection before 7:30 a.m. tomorrow in the eastern parishes.”

Any news on whether this may or may not effect the End to End walk on Saturday? Hopefully it passes by in time!

I wish the the department responsible for the maintenance and repair of the BWS radar would keep It operational. It has not been operating for weeks.
We have a severe weather warning issued and the radar makes it easy to stay updated on the weather.
Hurricane season is fast approaching and I hope repair is on the relevant departments radar.

It’s owned by Bermuda Weather Service, not a government department. I agree though, I wish it would stop going out. It always seems to be out when the weather gets bad too.

So are they saying that there’s a hurricane approaching but because it isn’t June 1st they can’t say the word ‘hurricane’ ?
