Court: Woman Sentenced To One Year In Prison
[Written by Don Burgess]
A 22-year-old woman was sentenced to one year in prison after pleading guilty to drug importation charges.
Ashley Mussenden said she was guilty of bringing in cannabis resin and ecstasy, and the Court heard the drugs have a combined street value of over $23,000.
The court heard the young woman had a turbulent childhood, which saw her in foster care before being sent away to Alpine Academy in Utah.
After graduating she had started a nursing programme, but at 18 she was forced back to Bermuda due to having no means to pay for her education.
Her lawyer called Ms Mussenden “a fierce young warrior.”
He said, “She is only 22-years-old, and in such a short period of time she has an encountered a dramatic course of events.”
Her lawyer provided the court with a letter from her former employer, a local restaurant, which said they would hire back with no hesitation.
Ms Mussenden said, “I know what I did was stupid. I know what I did brought shame on myself and my family.”
She added that she will overcome this because “I’m not my mistake, and all I’m asking for is a second chance.”
Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo sentenced her to 12 months for the ecstasy offence, and 12 months for the cannabis resin offence, but sentences are to run concurrently.
