Photos: Bermuda vs Mexico At Davis Cup Event
Bermuda welcomed Davis Cup competition back to the island for the first time in 30 years this weekend, with the national team taking on Mexico in a World Group II tie at the W.E.R. Joell Tennis Stadium, in front of an enthusiastic crowd.
Bermuda opened their the competition on Saturday [Sept 19] with the visitors taking a 2-0 lead after the opening singles matches. Daniel Phillips produced a strong fightback in his match against Alan Magadán, recovering from 5-1 down in the opening set to close the gap to 5-4 before the Mexican secured a 6-4, 6-1 victory. Trey Mallory also battled well against Alejandro Hernández, remaining competitive throughout the opening set before Hernández went on to record a 6-4, 6-2 win.
The tie resumes today, with Phillips and Mallory scheduled to face Magadán and Luis Carlos Álvarez in the doubles as Bermuda look to extend the contest.
