St Kitts Prime Minister Arrives In Bermuda

Dr. Denzil L. Douglas, Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, arrived in Bermuda at 8:20pm this evening [May 20]. He was greeted by Premier Dr Ewart Brown and Lieutenant Clifford Powell of the Bermuda Regiment, who will serve as his Aide-de-camp during his visit.

The Prime Minister was amongst the first to disembark from the flight [from Miami], and after a short delay his two person entourage exited the plane. Traveling with him is Mrs Astona Browne, the Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs and Mr Erasmus Williams, the Prime Minister’s Press Secretary. After landing, they drove off through the Governors Gate, being driven in GP4, accompanied by Lieutenant Powell.

This evening Premier Brown said:

It is an honor to receive Prime Minister Douglas and welcome him to Bermuda. We appreciate him accepting our invitation and look forward to renewing and strengthening the cultural and familial ties with the Government and people of St. Kitts.

  • 9:30 am: House of Assembly courtesy call
  • 10:00 am: Address to House of Assembly in session
  • 10.30 am: Presentation of draft Cultural MOU by the Minister Neletha Butterfield
  • 11:00 am: Courtesy call on Governor Sir Richard Gozney
  • 12:30 pm: Lunch hosted by Kittians in Bermuda at BUEI (Harbourfront)

Saturday May 22:

  • 11:00 am: Ferry to Dockyard; tour Commissioner’s House
  • 12:30 pm: Lunch at Commissioner’s House, hosted by Walter Lister
  • 7.30 pm: Cocktails
  • 8.00 pm: Dinner hosted by the Premier at CAMDEN

Sunday May 23:

  • 10.00 am: Christ Church Devonshire, Prime Minister to be Guest Speaker
  • 1:00pm: Lunch with Minister Cox, Canon Francis et al at Coco Reef
  • 6:30 pm: Town Hall meeting at Dr. E.F. Gordon Hall [open to public]

Monday May 24:

  • 12:50 pm: Arrive Front Street for May 24th Parade [with Governor, Premier, et al]

Tuesday May 25:

  • 8:10am: Departs Bermuda

Dr. Douglas has been Prime Minister for 15 years and was first appointed in July 1995. His St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party recently won its fourth consecutive term in January 2010. In a similarity to our own Premier, Dr Douglas is also a physician, having obtained a Degree in Medicine in 1984 from the University of the West Indies.

St Kitts & Nevis, officially The Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis, is approximately five times larger then Bermuda, at 101 square miles, however has a smaller population with approximately 42,000 people.
