Dodgers, Red Sox & Phillies Win Youth Baseball

June 22, 2010

There was plenty of action and excitement at the Kindley Field diamond in Southside, St. David’s, on Saturday (June 19) for the playoffs of this year’s Youth Athletic Organisation (YAO) baseball league, with the Dodgers, Red Sox and Phillies all claiming league titles.

Sponsored by the Argus Group, the league is open to anyone aged from 4 to 15 and features 23 teams divided into five age categories: the T-ball teams, ages four to six; the Rookie League, ages seven and eight; Minor Little League, ages nine and ten; Major Little League, ages eleven and twelve; and Senior League, ages thirteen through fifteen. The teams play every Saturday from April until June.

The Rookie League division was won by the Dodgers. The Red Sox claimed the championship title in both the Minor Little League and the Major Little League, while victory belonged to the Phillies in the Senior League, after a tense battle against the Red Sox.

Ms Pimental said: “We would like to congratulate this year’s winners and thank all of the participants for another exciting season. Argus is delighted to continue to support the YAO Baseball League as it provides the opportunity for young people to get active, meet fellow players and enjoy themselves at the same time. Physical activity is an incredibly important part of staying healthy.”

Brenda Lehmann, President of the YAO Baseball League, says: “The support we receive from Argus is central to the continued success of the league. This is the 12th year that we have received sponsorship from the Argus Group and that money is put to good use keeping our fields up to acceptable standards, assisting with travel expenses for overseas games and providing overall support to keep the league strong and successful. Our participants learn the value of teamwork; make new friends and we ask parents to also get involved so it is an opportunity for valuable family time too.”

The league is a charter member of Little League Baseball Incorporated, the world’s largest organised youth sports programme.
