New Website Launches: Open Data Principles

June 18, 2010

A new website OpenBermuda.com launched on May 26th, saying their goal is to promote the concept of open data, specifically to encourage Bermuda’s Government and businesses to make public data freely accessible to the public. Open Data is a philosophy and practice requiring that certain data is freely available to everyone, without restrictions from copyright, patents or other mechanisms of control.

OpenBermuda says the three principles of open data are:

1. If it isn’t findable using Google (and/or other search engines), it doesn’t exist
2. If it isn’t available in open and machine readable format, it can’t engage
3. If a legal framework doesn’t allow it to be shared, it doesn’t empower

They provide examples of the way that open data could benefit Bermuda including offering students the opportunity to use the data in school projects, youth camps for those interested in software development where open data can be used to build relevant skills and a better understanding of Bermuda, development of geo aware mobile apps that are relevant to Bermuda and more.

With a clean and simple design, instant emphasis on social media, and high use of hyperlinking, OpenBermuda is very web 2.0, and those technologically inclined may find the site of interest. You can follow Open Bermuda on Twitter here, join them on Facebook here, or visit their website here.
