Sluggo Says Goodbye to Cup Match
One of Bermuda’s most talented and colourful sporting figures has said his good-byes to Cup Match, as earlier today [July 30] an emotional Dwayne “Sluggo” Leverock said, “I have played for 15 years and the time has come for me to call it a day, I played for you the fans and gave my all, I am grateful for everything we have shared over the years and I will cherish the memories. This is something that I have decided to do, the time is right I started out in Somerset and now it ends in Somerset. ”
Mr. Leverock, who has been known to “blow kisses” to the crowd following a good play, made his first Cup Match appearance in the 1990s and has represented Bermuda numerous times internationally; most notably at the 2007 World Cup where his imposing size, skill and dramatic diving one-handed catch [pictured below] caused a worldwide sensation in the cricketing world.
In his final showing, Mr. Leverock won the 2010 Safe Hands Award, becoming only the third player in the history of the Cup Match Classic to win it twice. The veteran took took 44 wickets over his Cup Match career, and will go down in history as one of the best, and most beloved cricketers to play the game.
Well done Sluggo, you get my vote!!!! Congrats.
