Bermuda HealthCare Services [BHCS] announced the renaming of the prestigious Calvin ‘Bummy’ Symonds Safe Hands Award to the Bummy Symonds–Dennis Wainwright Safe Hands Award, beginning with Cup Match 2025, and also announced that the prize money for the award has been increased from from $1000.00 to $2,500.

A spokesperson said, “Bermuda HealthCare Services [BHCS] is proud to announce significant updates to the prestigious Calvin ‘Bummy’ Symonds Safe Hands Award presented yearly to the most outstanding fielder in the Annual Cup Match Classic.

“Beginning Cup Match 2025, the award will be renamed the Bummy Symonds–Dennis Wainwright Safe Hands Award, paying tribute to two of Bermuda’s cricketing greats. The renaming honours the lasting legacy of the late Dennis Wainwright, who faithfully administered the award until his passing in December 2024, and the celebrated contributions of the legendary Bummy Symonds.”

“Dennis was a devoted steward of this award and a beloved figure in the cricketing community,” said Dr. Ewart Brown, Founder and Executive Chairman of BHCS. “His contribution helped make the Safe Hands Award one of the most anticipated honours at Cup Match.”

The spokesperson said, “In a further enhancement, BHCS has increased the prize money for the award from $1000.00 to $2,500 in cash, underscoring its commitment to recognising excellence on the field. The award will be presented to the winning player following the Cup Match holiday.

“Dr. Brown also announced that Vincent Hollinsid will take over administration of the award moving forward.”

“Vincent brings a deep understanding of the game and a strong commitment to honouring its traditions,” said Dr. Brown. “We are confident he will carry forward the award with integrity and excellence.”
