Bermuda Hospitals Board New C.O.O
Bermuda Hospitals Board today announces the appointment of Susan Labus as Chief Operating Officer (King Edward VII Memorial Hospital), replacing Mr Robert Zinnen who left BHB earlier this year. The Chief Operating Officer (KEMH) position is hired through the ongoing Kurron contract, but is an integrated position in the Senior Management Team reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer and accountable to the Board.
As Chief Operating Officer (KEMH), Ms Labus is responsible for Diagnostic Imaging, Pathology, Pharmacy, Health Information Management Services and Guest Services (Food Services, Environmental Services and Laundry) at KEMH. Part of Ms Labus’ role will be working with the pool of Bermudian candidates that have been identified as potential successors for this position as part of BHB’s succession planning process.
Ms Labus brings with her almost 25 years’ experience in the healthcare administration and management field, with almost 10 years’ experience as a Chief Operating Officer. She joins us from Pocono Medical Centre in Pennsylvania, a 231-bed acute care medical centre with 1,200 employees, 150 medical staff and an Emergency Department that has over 90,000 visits each. As Senior Vice President & Chief Operating Officer for almost two years, Ms Labus was responsible for day-to-day operations of all service lines.
Prior to this position, Ms Labus was Chief Operating officer at Medical Assisted Recovery, a new behavioural facility start-up. She worked five years prior to that at Caritas Christi Health Care in Boston in various senior operating roles. Ms Labus has also held senior business development and operating roles at Landmark Medical Centre in RI, as well in Catholic Health System and The Buffalo General Hospital in New York.
Ms Labus has a Master of Science in Health Care Administration and Advanced Graduate Certification in Integrated Healthcare Delivery Systems from the Rochester Institute of Technology, and a Bachelor of Sciences/Medical Record Administration from Daeman College, Buffalo, New York. Ms Labus has also been recognised as one of Buffalo, New York’s ‘Business Women of the Year’ in 1990 and was nominated for a 2008 Pinnacle Award for outstanding leadership, an award sponsored by the Boston Chamber of Commerce.
CEO & President, Mr David Hill, comments: “I am very pleased to welcome Susan to this vital role at a very exciting time for the hospital. We are on a constant path to improve the healthcare we provide Bermuda through improved technology and services, establishing a culture of service excellence and, of course, redeveloping KEMH and building a new facility. While the new facility will not open until 2014, work is already underway to ensure we meet the highest international standards in our operations and Susan’s experience and skills will be a great asset to us.
