Photos: Airport Fence Damage Post Igor
With all the debate circling at present about the airport security fence, we went through our photos to find ones of the fence after the passing of Hurricane Igor in order to provide clear reference.
Yesterday [Sept 29], Airport General Manager Aaron Adderely was initially quoted in the media as saying they didn’t have the funds to fix the fence all at one time, to which Pat Gordon-Pamplin, Shadow Minister for Works & Engineering, said “This was an extraordinary admission that showed the Government’s reckless spending is limiting its ability to perform basic functions”, and the failure to fix the fence may possibly trigger reviews by foreign governments.
A further statement released yesterday by Government quoted Mr. Adderley as saying “The airport will always have significant capital requirements, both airside and inside the terminal. It should be noted that the airport facility is currently in the process of replacing areas of the fencing bordering the facility, and this work was ongoing well before yesterday’s incident. As a further note, capital works, inclusive of maintenance is a standard line item in the airport budget, these funds are used, amongst other things to repair the perimeter fence line, which is often damaged by hurricanes and winter storms. The fence encloses an area that is over 600 acres in size, nearly one tenth the size of Bermuda’s total land mass, and replacing it completely is a significant undertaking.
As many will recall, at 4:00am on Tues, Sept 28th, Police responded to the L. F. Wade International Airport due to a breach of security in which a man was found in a restricted area without authority, which Bernews understands to be on the tarmac attempting to use a ladder to gain entry to a plane. A 31-year-old Warwick man was subsequently arrested by Police, and the two American Airlines planes were fully checked and deemed safe for travel. ” On that evening’s newcast ZBM ran a report showing reporter Gary Moreno demonstrating how he was able to walk through the gaps in the fencing onto the tarmac.
