TIME: Dr. Sylvia Earle in the Sargasso
The video below shows Dr. Sylvia Earle, a famed American oceanographer with the nickname “Her Deepness”, who traveled to Bermuda recently along with a journalist from TIME Magazine. The video focuses on the Sargasso Sea, and the attempts to preserve it.
Dr Earle is considered one of the best of the genre; she is a former Chief Scientist for the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, is a National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence, holds the women’s record for a solo dive in a deep submersible (3280 feet, 1000m), led the Google Ocean Advisory Council for the “Ocean in Google Earth” and has written numerous books and papers and won numerous awards. At 75-years-old, Dr Earle shows no signs of slowing down, and continues to travel worldwide exploring the ocean’s depths.
Premier Ewart Brown said “When an international publication of the caliber and reputation of Time Magazine takes an interest in our island and the positive work coming out of the Ministry of the Environment it is good news for Bermuda! This article will not only bring Bermuda to the attention of millions of Time Magazine readers around the globe, but will also help to raise awareness of the rationale for a High Seas Marine Protected Area around the Sargasso Sea.
“We often say that there are two pillars to our economy; tourism and International business but those pillars are underpinned by the high quality of Bermuda’s environment. The health of the Sargasso Sea is inextricably linked to Bermuda’s health and the idea that Bermuda could play a pivotal role in advocating enduring protection of the Sargasso Sea is obviously very appealing to us.”
“With the looming threat of dramatic global environmental change it is clear that the nations of the world must unite to protect vulnerable ecosystems. With so few areas of the world’s oceans being protected, this is an important cause and one with which Bermuda is proud to be associated.”
Environment Minister Glenn Blakeney said “This is good news for Bermuda. We simply couldn’t ask for better publicity. Time Magazine had an all-time high audience of 40 million readers and Web users worldwide. Time was voted America’s most trusted news source, selected as college students’ favorite magazine and has the largest newsstand growth among all major magazines.
“So potentially tens of millions of people around the world will this week read about Bermuda and the environmental research and stewardship for which we are becoming recognized as world leaders. I am proud, I know the Premier is proud, certainly those who have been working on this initiative are proud – and soon all of Bermuda will be proud to say that we are part of the global effort to protect our oceans.|
