Minister of Labour, Home Affairs and Housing Lt. Col. David Burch’s full remarks are below:
Good Morning,
This week the Bermuda Fire Service celebrates Fire Safety Awareness Week and the theme is SMOKE DETECTORS – A SOUND YOU CAN LIVE WITH – an event that is also observed across North America and the United Kingdom.
Public safety is a top priority in the islands of Bermuda and safety from fire is important to our citizens and to local firefighters who put their lives on the line with every response to a fire.
This week is designed to encourage Bermuda residents to take action to prevent fires and to prepare to protect yourself should a fire strike. Employing good fire safety practices in your homes is paramount to the safety of you and your families. Things that can be done include having a home fire escape plan, installing and maintaining smoke alarms through our homes and buildings and regular fire safety drills.
The reduction of injury or death is the goal we want to achieve.
I am pleased to note that this year for the first time – the Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service are going into the community with outreach to both ends of the island during Fire Safety Week to carry the message to as wide an audience as possible. With that effort and media coverage I am confident we will reach a majority of our citizens
As the Minister responsible for the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service it is my pleasure to herby proclaim the week of October 25 – 29, 2010 as, Fire Safety Awareness Week in Bermuda.
Thank you.
Smoke detectors are great, they work and can alert you when it is detected.
It’s unfortunate that Government didn’t have a “Mirror” week to coincide with it.
I am working on a new version of Smoke Detectors that will be available to all Bermudians withing the next two weeks. Preliminary tests show that it works without batteries and can be installed in any room, on any level and will not upset your neighbors.
The “RG Special” will alert you to anything, fire, burglars, mosquitos, ants, platinum covered tourists, even falling Paw Paws. Kisskadees hate it and tree frogs disapear into the empty property such as Morgainz Pohnt and Holiday Was Inn………
I hope the Hustle truck is well stacked….just in case we have a fire…………
“prevent fires”…….Yah gunna need a bigger truck Colonel………………oops..Lt……
