Police Execute Warrant On Retail Store

October 1, 2010

Earlier this afternoon and this evening [Oct 1] a heavy Police presence was seen on Court Street as the Bermuda Police Service executed a warrant on a business in the area.

A large number of Police descended upon retail store ‘Tuff Shoes’ located on 53 Court Street, with some reports suggesting some officers were armed, and others were seen to be carrying metal detectors. Police spokesman Dwayne Caines confirmed that the Police were executing a search warrant, however did not provide any detailed information.

The Police remained at the store for approximately four hours, with the last eight officers seen leaving the retail establishment at approximately 8:20pm tonight. The officers left the scene, with some carrying what appeared to be roll-on suitcases.

A prominent lawyer, who is not known to frequent the area, was seen “hanging about” Court Street this evening, and after the last Police officers departed he was spotted hovering by the store, talking with certain individuals.

While we were on scene we saw nothing to indicate that anything untoward was found within the establishment, however it is unclear at this time whether any illegal goods were discovered or whether any arrests were made.

They never seem to amaze me. Tuff shoes been having a sale on all week yet they keep targeting them for drug related issues. Is it too much traffic in and out the store? What is it? Something don’t seem right, they can sit outside of Yankees shop for years and not execute a warrant to search his business / The you have some dude from the gang frce unit go court and defend this man and his family. This police service really takes everyone for a joke…….As long as they tackle everyone else they feel their job is done………..F^(#!&g LAMES! Their are more people out there like myself who know exactly whats going on in these streets. SMH!

Who’s the REAL Gate Keeper?????? Look at the bigger picture….I’m with you though!!

  2. Sal says:

Why are you moaning about an alleged money launderer’s business being searched?

“ seen to be carrying metal detectors “ means they were looking for guns.
you don’t want the guns off the street?

If you “ know exactly whats going on in these streets “ why don’t you inform Police where the drugs & guns that are killing and maiming every week ?

Every murder & injury costs taxpayers thousands, even millions in police, prison, legal staff, overtime, hospital costs, air ambulance etc.

    • TruthBtold says:

The point I was making being that you don’t understand where I’m coming from is this; things will not get better if the police are protecting specific criminals while they consistently tackle the others. That is what lead things to where they are now. The police know it but yet they play dumb like their not apart of it. Look pass what’s in front of you and evaluate the situation for what it is!

TruthBtold – The owner of Tuff Shoes has been to prison for money laundering and is no stranger to be breaking the law and unless you work for the police then you have no idea who the police are trying to protect and stuff – see below

“A jailed shoe shop owner has admitted two drugs related offences in addition to the crimes which landed him a seven-year sentence.

Goodwin Davano Spencer, 41 — already in prison after being convicted of 11 charges of money laundering totalling more than $145,000 — was given an extra 18 months to his sentence for cannabis possession on Wednesday.

However, the sentence will run concurrently with the seven years he already had, meaning his stretch behind bars will not be any longer than he already faced.

At Supreme Court yesterday, Spencer pleaded guilty to possessing 41.49 grams — about 1.5 ounces — of cannabis.

He also admitted possession of a food vacuum packaging tool which he used to keep the drugs fresh.

Puisne Judge Carlisle Greaves gave him a 12-month sentence for that charge, also to run concurrently.

Spencer denied a third charge of conspiracy to supply cannabis and claimed the drugs were for his personal use.”

How is this shop still even in business? The owner and manager Devanno Spencer got sent to jail for money laundering a couple of years ago.
What happened to the proceeds of crime act? Surely the shops stock should have been sold off by the govt by now, but it continues as though nothing has happened.

Maybe different owners?…and whose to say the proceeds of money laundering funded the business… if this was the case than the business, stock, etc would have been confiscated but obviously that was not the case….

@TruthBtold you don’t have to defend your comment to anyone! That’s how you feel! and Sal needs to respect that!!! Let the Police do their own job..that’s what they signed up for….I have reports to do every month I don’t expect anyone to help me because that’s what my job entails and thats what I signed up for.. I get sick and tired of people saying “oh well why don’t people come forward and give information and all that dumb crap..it really irritates me…THEY signed up to serve and protect and solve crimes ….let THEM do their jobs!!! I totally agree with you instead of looking at the little picture everyone needs to look at the bigger picture!!!!!! and until the coruuption on the force stops the shit that goes on in this island is not going to stop!! and while all police may not be involved some of thier co-workers allegedly are!!!!!!!! I’m just saying!!!!

    • Lissa says:

Well since you know so much about this alleged corruption – than spill.

      • Peace and Love says:

@ Lissa NOY MY JOB!!!!! and if I know it’s not for me to tell.. If you want to know sit down and talk to your parents or grandparents who are old enough and wise enough… talk to other seniors and they don’t have to relatives either!! Let them start off by telling you how the land in Tuckers Town was stole from our ancestors (if your black).. and how corruption seeps into the atmosphere by other means as well..Corruption is a worldwide thing.. we are not unique….Have a Blessed weekend! Peace and Love!!!

        • Logic76 says:

Race card again! It really is becoming a joke…how original!

          • Peace and Love says:

@ Logic I am not using the race card..land in Tuckers Town was stolen from the blacks back in the day..that is actually a part of history and was just a point used to show an example of how long corruption has been in play..my apologies if you were offended by a fact….Peace and love!

        • Tired of nonsense says:

Actually there were both white and black living in Tucker’s Town when the Government of the day paid off the residents to resettle elsewhere. So it was not a forced eviction per se. This is what happens when you listen to certain zealots who simply want to portray people that don’t look like them as inherently evil and racist. Why don’t you think that they never mentioned that the reisdents of the area in the day were compensated for their land and that there were a mix of people who were essentially evicted.

          Learn your history people…

        • Lissa says:

Well you said that some of the police co-workers are allegedly invovled in corruption. Now you are saying that i should ask my granparents how the co-worker of a police is invovled in corruption. You lost me.
All i am saying is that those are some strong words and accusations to make and you shouldnt make them unless you plan on backing them up with fact.

  5. Peace and Love says:

@ Lissa again one would be naive to think that corruption does not exist..one would have to be like an ostrich with his/her head buried in the sand…. as my first posting indicated (and i read it again myself to make sure) I said some but not all officers… I can attest to that because I have several friends on the Police Force (and oh by the way I was a Reserve Consatble) and some of them are awesome, are great at their job and very genuine and have the peoples interest at heart. A few of them on the other hand are “as shady as the night is long” …. so I know exactly what I am talking about…. I have also been an Officer at the Bermuda Regiment (and yes I am female)… I have seen the corruption there as well…I have also worked in Business Management… and yes once again seen the corruption there.. so you see corruption is both black and white and it is not only a size 4, but can be a size 6,7,or 8…it knows no boundaries…I normally try not to get into a “Bernews Story Debate” with others because people tend to not respest others opinions and are quick to judge..but I felt the need…again I say Peace and Love!!!

    • Logic76 says:

Corruption is every where. The older one grows, the more cynical the world makes them. The corruption on this island is amateur compared to Berlusconi in Italy, or even many figures in the US government. When you take a look at the bigger picture it’s simply human nature to want more.

      • D says:

        @Logic76

What bigger picture. Why are you bringing up Italy? Corruption is on this island and it is making certain people’s lives harder than they need to be. That is a real issue, and talking about how other areas are worst is completely irrelevant.

    • Lissa says:

Sounds lke you may be crooked as well since you know so much and didnt blow the whistle.
