Alvone Maybury Sentenced to 13.5 Years
[Updated] This afternoon [Nov 4] in Supreme Court, former escaped prisoner Alvone Maybury was sentenced to 13.5 years in prison, after being convicted of a number of firearm charges relating to an incident in December of last year, as well as his infamous escape.
He received 12 years for discharging a firearm, ten years for possession of a firearm (concurrent), ten years for possessing ammunition (concurrent), and 1 ½ years imprisonment for escaping lawful custody – to run consecutive to the firearms convictions.
Mr. Maybury, who was famously dubbed the Facebook Fugitive by the international media, was said to have fired a gun at rival gang members on Reid Street on December 18, 2009.
During the trial the court heard that following a verbal disagreement with the rival gang, Mr Maybury opened fired. In another case of technology being utlized in a trial, the jury saw videos that Mr. Maybury had captured on his cell phone showing him holding a weapon.
He was found guilty of charges including possessing a prohibited weapon, discharging a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition.
The then 24-year-old father of one dramatically sprinted away from Prison Officer’s custody outside of Magistrates Court this summer. He was updating his Facebook while on the run, and at one point had promised to turn himself in. Mr Maybury, who managed to elude authorities for 13 days, was captured by Police in a shed in the Glebe Road area.
Update 5:45pm: Detective Chief Inspector Nicholas Pedro, Officer In Charge of the Serious Crime Unit, addressed Mr Maybury’s sentencing saying:
The Bermuda Police Service would again like to acknowledge the sentence of the courts today in the matter regarding Mr. Alvone Maybury. Mr. Maybury was unanimously convicted by a jury of discharging a firearm in a busy city street, in the lead up to Christmas last year. He was sentenced to a total of thirteen and a half years imprisonment (12 years for discharging a firearm, ten years for possession of a firearm (concurrent), ten years for possessing ammunition (concurrent), and 1 ½ years imprisonment for escaping lawful custody – to run consecutive to the firearms convictions).
Bermudian society has been rocked in recent months by a plague of gun violence perpetrated by persons who have displayed a flagrant disregard for life, law, and order. The recent convictions and sentences of the courts for persons convicted of gun and violent crimes, including this case, are intended to protect society from these offenders, and also hopefully serve as a deterrent to those contemplating engaging in these acts of senseless violence.
The Bermuda Police Service wishes to thank all of the persons who have assisted by providing information & giving evidence in this and other cases that clearly has enabled the course of justice to prevail. It clearly demonstrates what can be achieved when the community comes forward to assist Police investigations and the Director of Public Prosecutions in mounting successful prosecutions against violent offenders.

Not long enough…
the moment you use a gun it should be Life plus 99 years!!
I Co-Sign That!!!!!
Really need to get rid of that whole ‘to run concurrently’ crap…if his sentence had run consecutively, this doofus would have been put away for 33.5 years instead of a measly 13.5…
Hear Hear!!! Send a clear message that this type of behavior can not and will not be accpeted or tolerated. Period….
13 years not enough. Thats enough time for the loser to get out and be a loser again
But how much longer before we start getting the ‘love ya bro , keep ya head high’
‘ignore de haterz’ etc & etc posts ? ?
LMFAO! YOU KNOW THOSE COMMENTS ARE COMING VERY SOON! I’M SO GLAD YOU TOUCHED ON THAT BEFORE THE SIMPLE-MINDED PEOPLE COME INTO ACTION!
Brasco you must not have a life at all, this is my 1st time ever commenting and I felt the need to cause all you do is sit up on bernews and comment on neagtive activity get a LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@Observer….You sound like you are actually his family member or friend….Sorry to offend your Stupid Offender…If you have Observed correctly, you’ll see that most people here are on the same page…..Other than the Glue Sniffer “Terry” (From other post)….If, you have observed his postings….All I know you could be Terry the Observer
The problem in bda is just because someone has committed an offense ppl expect everyone to turn their backs on the individual. Until it happens to your friend or relative PLZ STOP THE TALK, obvious you all arent true friends or relatives if your gonna turn ya back just like that!!!!!
observer,
clearly you do NOT live up to your pen name,
otherwise you would have observed we are NOT his friends or relatives.
Are you serious……..friend or foe WRONG is Wrong it’s not about turning your back it’s about allowing that individual to claim responsibility for his/her actions. Momma, daughter, sister, brother, cousin, if that’s the life they choose then those are the consequences they have to suffer. As far as standing by them for moral support NO PROB but that doesn’t change the fact that what they done was wrong.
At least he’ll be able to keep us regularly updated on Facebook. Young guy (piece a meat)like that could be very popular in jail.
going to have to agree that this sentence is too short…maybe if the judge had been nearby when that lead slug was flying thru the air his sentence would have been different….worst part is that 13 years really amounts to about 108 months so he will be out in no time at all….o well we r in a different world after all
Why does everyone keep complaining in their post about the sentence? Again I say read the Firearms Act (You can access it online) and you will see that according to the laws of the land (in this case Bermuda)he received adequate time for his crime.. Speak to those in power and have the Laws updated…
@peace and Love — People are complaing about the sentence because this guy will only do about 5-7 years and be out.He will prob still be in his 20′s when he gets out. Many people make mistakes in life and deserve a second chance but in these cases its really no excuse for what is happening right now.He was old enough to know what he was doing and he got off way to easy people have done more time for bringing in a few thousand dollars worth of drugs.
And @ OBSERVER you really cant be serious if someone i knew was running around with a gun and trying to kill people i will no longer call this person my friend ,More families and friends need to dismiss this behavior and call out what they know their families are doing at an early stage to prevent them from getting worse, they dont and let the behavior get worse and worse that why you see whats going on now.
- “SHOW ME WHO YOUR FRIENDS ARE AND I’LL SHOW YOU WHO YOU ARE”
dont know how true this quote is but its starts to make a lot more sense the older you get
@ Vern I understand how much time he will serve and I understand why people are complaining..my point was why complain here on this “blog”? he was sentenced according to the law..my thought was instead of people complaining here why not complain to the powers that be…Ours laws are what are so crazy..the young man that was charged for the manslaughter of Kellon Hill got 12 years years…he actually killed someone,,Alvone even though he was in the wrong did not kill anyone but yet he received a similar sentence as did the others that have been convicted in the last few months..they are both serious crimes even though one can be deemed worse than the other but they will serve the same amount of time…Cleary this shows that the laws need to be changed…and it is an area that needs to be addressed sooner than later!!!
@ Peace and Love ,we should all thank Bernews for posting are real true feelings without them editing it and changing what we wrote like what bda sun does they have done it to me several times so i no longer post on there. And yes he was sentenced according to the law but they can change those laws if needed just as they did when more and more shootings started to happen they changed the law on how long the police can hold an individual to a few months instead of a few days or weeks or whatever it was before.
Sooner or later the majority of the public will demand stricter punishment its just a matter a time and we will go through the correct channels to do that, but for murder and attemted murder 10 – 15 years is unacceptable the judges should not be pleased about this in anyway shape or form.People can get out of jail for murder or attempted and bump into some of the family members of the person they killed and being the size of bermuda it will happen and has happened on many occasions from what i hear, and hopefully they address this situation because its all just getting crazy, i wont get into details but recently a few of my friends came down to bermuda for a visit and were threatened on the streets for nothing they were just walking and minding there own business, i mean is this where bermuda is headed,
@ Vern I kind of think your missing my point but somehow we are still on the same page..I HAVE NO COMPLAINTS WITH WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ..WHAT I AM SAYING IS THAT THEY SHOULD COMPLAIN TO THE POWERS THAT BE SO THAT THE LAWS CAN BE CHANGED. I feel you on the threatening aspect..I received a phone call in reference to my son because he was “seen” talking to someone that a group of guys have a problem with..I was told that I better watch out for my son…like are you serious?? you can’t even talk to nobody? I simply told the person on the phone that my son was not raised in the streets so don’t bring it to my doorstep!!
@ Peace ,ok i see what your saying now. well lets see where bda goes from here ,I just feel like not enought is being done and i dont know what people are waiting for.Meaning the Gov and police. But we shall see ,i will remain disgusted as to whats going on. And if it is not a serious crack down immediately we will all see things getting worse.
I Totally agree!
