Tre Houston: Bermuda’s Next Ice Man Cometh?
Bermuda’s top sprinter Tre Houston is a world-class track and field athlete — and now there are some trying to recruit him as Bermuda’s next Winter Olympian.
Mr Houston, who set two personal bests during the recent 2010 Commonwealth Games in India, recently told Bernews there had been some preliminary discussions about him following in the tracks of Bermudian lugers Simon Payne and Patrick Singleton and skier Tucker Murphy by training for the XXII Olympic Winter Games being held in Russia.
“I was approached when I was taking part at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi to see if I would be interested in taking part of 2014 Winter Olympics,” he said. “Since I have been back, I have not really been bothered because my love right now is track – but I will put some major thought into it if I dont go as far as I want to (in sprinting).”
Since the four-man Jamaica bobsled team debuted at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Calgary Alberta, it’s become increasingly common for competitors from tropical or semi-tropical countries to take part in cold-weather sports at the international level.
The Jamaica team, which was made up of sprinters, returned to the Olympics in the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, France, but finished poorly.
They qualified again for the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway. There, the Jamaican four sled stunned many of their critics by finishing in 14th place, ahead of the US, Russia, Australia and France. In 2000, the Jamaican bobsled team won the gold medal at the World Push Championships in Monaco.
Tre is the guy, go Tre!!
