Day 2: Sailing World Champs in Malaysia

December 31, 2010

Makai Joell continued his hot steak during Day 2 of the IODA Sailing World Championships in Langkawi, Malaysia by scoring a 31 and 21 respectively in the day’s two races (Dec 31).

Today’s racing was abbreviated to only 2 races to allow for a customary Muslim religious observance. Joell is currently in 29th place in the 231 boat fleet. Sam Stan is the second Bermudian and is in 82nd place after scoring a 32 and a 19 today. Chase Cooper also had a good first race of the day placing 22nd and was in 8th place at the first windward mark. His second race was a disappointing 71st and he currently sits in 161st place. Antonio Bailey is 165th for the regatta and carded a 48 and 56 for the day while Ceci Wollmann is in 187th place and had finishes today of 65 and 63. Completion of the the 6th Race tomorrow will allow sailors to discard their worse race to date which should help their standings.

The general feeling from Team Leader Anthony Bailey’s report of the day was upbeat but he was in agreement with the Team Coach Zizi Stanuil that there was room for improvement. Coach Zizi felt that as a whole our sailors could have done better and needed to maintain their focus from start to finish of each race. Coach Zizi also felt that some of the conditions our sailors are facing are similar to those they had trained in during the days leading up to the regatta and that the information they discussed on how to sail in the challenging current was not being used by all sailors.

The regatta is currently being led by two Thai sailors and a Korean sailor. German visitor and participant in the 2010 PWC Bermuda National Championships, Marvin Firsch sits in fourth place overall. Two time Ren Re Jr Gold Cup visitor and 2010 unner-up in that event, Odile Van Aanholt (Netherlands Antilles) is the top girl and is in 5th place overall. The 2010 RenRe Jr Gold Cup Champion Diogo Pereira from Portugal is in 8th while another guest for that event, American Chris Williford (2 time North American Champion), is in 9th place.
