72-Yr-Old Sailor’s Boat Spotted off Spain

Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre this morning [Jan 24] said that the previously overdue sailing vessel ‘Oberig’ which departed Bermuda in September 2010 has been sighted off Cartagena, Spain.

The 34 foot sloop departed Bermuda on the 24th September, 2010 bound for Europe with a single handed 72 year old Ukrainian sailor onboard. Family members expressed concern for the safety and whereabouts of the sailing vessel and following further investigation it was confirmed that the vessel was last sighted safe and well off Cartagena, Spain.

Oberig

The yacht Oberig [pictured above] arrived in Bermuda on August 27th 2010 and departed September 24th 2010 for the Azores. The vessel, built in 1972, was based in St Georges for her month long stay in Bermuda. Repairs to the vessels boom and engine were carried out during that time.

    she don’t look like much but I guess she’s more sea worthy than a lot of mass production ‘sail boats’ that look ‘nice’ kitted out with big screen TVs, ice makers, electric head, etc, but are useless for blue water cruising
