Video Preview: “I Love You Phillip Morris”

January 19, 2011

The Bermuda International Film Festival [BIFF] will launch its 2011 monthly film series – BIFFlixs – on January 27 with the premiere screening in Bermuda of “I Love You Phillip Morris.”

The film brings together the comedic talents of Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor. Based on the real-life story and novel by onetime Houston Chronicle reporter, Steve McVicker, “I Love You Phillip Morris” is the tale of a spectacularly charismatic conman’s journey from small-town businessman to flamboyant white-collar criminal.

Steven Russell [Jim Carrey] leads a seemingly average life – an organ player in the local church, happily married to Debbie [Leslie Mann], and a member of the local police force. That is until he has a severe car accident that leads him to the ultimate epiphany: he’s gay and he’s going to live life to the fullest – even if he has to break the law to do it.

Taking on an extravagant lifestyle, Steven turns to cons and fraud to make ends meet and is eventually sent to the State Penitentiary where he meets the love of his life, a sensitive, soft-spoken man named Phillip Morris [Ewan McGregor]. His devotion to freeing Phillip from jail and building the perfect life together prompts him to attempt, and often succeed at, one impossible con after another.

Aideen Ratteray Pryse, Director, Bermuda International Film Festival, says: “BIFF is most well known for its annual film festival but we are actually busy all year round offering something different for film buffs and the most casual filmgoers in Bermuda. We are launching our monthly film screenings with “I Love You Phillip Morris” as it adopts a fresh approach to the rom-com genre. I am sure it will kickstart 2011 by raising more than a few smiles.”

The 1 hr 40 min film, rated R, will be shown in the Tradewinds Auditorium at Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute [BUEI] on Crow Lane in Hamilton at 6:30 p.m. on January 27. Ticket prices are: $9 for BIFF members and $13 for non-members.

Tickets will be available in advance at www.premierticketsglobal.com or at the door on the day from 5:30 p.m. For reservations, enquiries or for further details about membership, email info@biff.bm or call 293-3456.
