Confessed Killer Gets Life Sentence
Today [Jan 31] confessed murderer Jermaine Pearman, who admitted killing his former girlfriend Shakeya DeRoza, was sentenced to life in prison. Mr Pearman must serve a minimum of 25 years before being considered eligible for parole.
Earlier this week Mr Pearman, 37, pleaded guilty to killing 23-year-old Sandys resident Shakeya DeRoza but denied a charge of premeditation. This past Friday [Jan 28] Mr Pearman was scheduled to be sentenced, however the sentencing was pushed back to today following extensive legal discussions from both sides.
Mr Pearman attacked Ms DeRoza at her Paynter Lane home on July 10, 2009, using a knife to slash her throat and inflict wounds to her heart.
Ms DeRoza, who worked as a Corrections Officer, staggered out of the house following the brutal attack, but collapsed and died on Middle Road after trying to reach neighbourhood shops for help.
Police arrested Mr Pearman later that same afternoon following a stand-off on the Railway Trail in Somerset. When he was eventually taken into custody, he had a self-inflicted wound to his neck and was alleged to be in possession of a knife.
Mr Pearman has a criminal history dating back over 15 years, including prior convictions for assault with intent to commit bodily harm, unlawful carnal knowledge of a teenager and drug possession.
Ms Deroza’s two young children are now being cared for by her family.

This man should never be allowed into our society EVER again. I’m glad justice was served.
Co-Sign….Life should mean life!!!….Just think, he still gets to eat, watch cable and work out in the gym….oogghhhh!!!!
co-sign
in ya face Pearman!!!!! I hope they beat ya a$$ when you get there!
Was she pregnant ? Should he also get 2 life sentences ?
(not sure how this life sentence thing goes)
Thoughts and prayers to Ms DeRoza’s family & friends.
No she wasn’t pregnant…
But that 25 years is still not enough to me…Life should mean just that…LIFE…next stop…your grave!
I agree, life should mean life not after 25 years you get a chance of freedom, hers is gone she will never walk this earth again he took that away, my heart goes out to her children.
I suppose if you are brave and evil enough to end someone else’s life, you are brave enough to end your own just the same. Eye for an Eye? Well the Lord does giveth life and the Lord does taketh away just the same.
Glad he got life, she was a lovely girl and no one deserves to die in that horrific manner. Still we cant take his life cause an eye for an eye would leave everyone blind, and what would that show these idiot gun boys, that its okay to strike back.. Also to people like Brasco that think guys can watch cable , Wrong, if u were in the states yeah<< and if u think is a holiday camp u go up there for a holiday and see if u would wanna go back.. So dont be a band wagon jumper..
With all the energy from my soul, I do not believe this is enough – - He does not deserve to have us, the tax payers of Bermuda, paying for him to live after what he has done. Not enough – - no.
Should have been NO chance of parole ever. My sympathies to Shakeya’s family.
Bring back capital punishment. He should be hung right away for the crime he committed! Why waste the tax payers money!
25 years=25 years. If he doesn’t die in that time he’s eligible to get out which means it isn’t a life sentence. When are these primitive laws going to be changed? Slitting someones THROAT? I can’t imagine what she went through. Sick.
Bring back the rope!
Ladies out there please move away from situations like him at the first sign. Mothers please teach your daughters that a slap or punch doesn’t mean he loves you! Sadly this is not the first time this has happened, remember the lady at crawl gas station, and they lady at the office building near the ferry terminal…weve got to find a way to put an end to this foolishness!!!!
This guy should be put to DEATH!
25 years?? I miss Shakeya so much and this murderer gets 25 years to life. This is ridiculous, I can’t stop crying thinking about what Shakeya went through on that day and still had the strength to get up and run to try and get help. She was truly an angel on earth and I hope Jermaine get punished serverly in jail for taking her away from us. She did not deserve this at ALL!
There are so many bad comments. get a grip. he was obviously troubled. we see that now.
To the family of Ms. DeRoza, I was so sad to hear what happened. She was a very kind person..that if anyone had the unfortunate circumstance that they had to be there..she was one of the nice ones. very kind and made a bad situation bearable.
regards. she was a nice girl. he won’t have a life living in jail…sorry…there is no caBLE tv and stuff. he’ll suffer. i’M sure her family wants to move on and remember her for the decent person she was.
An eye for an eye. Bring back the big one and let him swing.
I just feel so sorry for the children…A mother they’ll never get to know..and their own father was the one who took that away from them…I just pray for her mom (their grandmother) that she continues to have the strength to guide and protect them….
if we were brutally honest, we`d admit that while jermaine’s actions were reprehensible, they are not an aberration.
simply put, we (men of all colours living on the rock) have been emotionally, sexually and physically abusing women for some time now. it – along with the epidemic rates of *often unreported* child sexual abuse – is one of many dirty little secrets that are tucked away in our massive closet.
jermaine, his good buddy george liburd and other local woman-killers (i include here fish that ‘got away’ like kirk mundy) are merely the extreme expression of a culture of misogyny that normalizes the devaluing of anything female and justifies the use of force in extracting whatever we deem is rightfully ours from them, if we see fit to do so.
in sum, the murder of young Shakeya DeRoza is a crime of the highest order, to be sure. and (in an ideal world) her murderer should NEVER taste the sweet nectar of freedom. but if we are to turn tragedy into opportunity, we would do well to turn the light of scrutiny on ourselves and dare to ask, and then answer, the following:
- what messages are we conveying to our young boys about the worth of girls and women?
- are we adequately developing the emotional vocabulary of our young boys so that, when anger seizes them – as it no doubt will, from time to time – they have something else to call on besides a knee-jerk, inchoate rage?
Jackson Katz tackles these questions in his book “The Macho Paradox”; Byron Hurt unpacks pathological manhood in hip hop in his documentary “Beyond Beats and Rhymes”; and Tony Porter’s organization “A Call to Men” provides a brilliant analysis of the pernicious effects of what he calls ‘the Man Box’ on the lives and safety of both males and females.
the origin and nature of pathological hypermasculinity is a subject that must be unpacked. it is a subject that desperately needs attention if we – men AND women – are serious about stopping male violence against women.
we must be about the business of raising a different kind of male child, if we want to live in a community where girls and women can feel safe in the company of boys and men.
if we fail to do this, then the rapes, violent assaults and murders (more often perpetrated by boyfriends and husbands – folks who often claim to love their victims – than the stereotypical ‘stranger in the bushes’) WILL continue, unabated…and Shakeya will have truly died in vain.
they have cable in jail u weirdos lol so whoever sayin they dont, hasn’t been to jail.
I hope when he gets up westgate someone beats his ass BAD!! and now we as tax payers have to support his ass!! he will still have life, watch tv, eat play and see his family… poor girl cant even see her kids grow up because of some inconsiderate selfish jealous b&%tard… Rot in hell!!
I read recently that one prisoner in Westgate costs the taxpayer $81,000 a year. This ‘upstanding citizen’ will be in prison for the next 25 years and then some. Therefore, not taking into account any form of inflation, the taxpayer will have spent at least $2,025,000 to kep him locked up. Included in the taxpayers will no doubt eventually be her own children; paying to keep this man locked up for murdering their mother. How sad is that?
