Videos: Shooting in Warwick: No Injuries

January 5, 2011

BPS SMH 2 [Updated] At 12:13pm today [Jan 5], Police responded to a report of gunshots outside Hayward’s supermarket on Middle Road in Warwick.

Police stated that “A short time later, a vehicle of interest in the inquiry failed to stop for Police on Cedar Hill and was involved in a collision with a Police vehicle. There are no reported injuries at this time and a 26 year old man was arrested. Active inquiries into both incidents are underway.”

“I heard what sounded like shots: I said, ‘Somebody’s shooting’ and I ran out of my shop to see what was happening,” an eyewitness told Bernews. “I saw a bunch of guys running towards my shop. Some kept going up Cedar Hill. One guy ran to the right.

“The guys on the bike who were doing the shooting rode up and turned right and fired at the guy who was running that way. He turned the corner and they lost him. They rode off and went back onto the road and must have gone up Khyber Pass”.

Another man who was working close by, stopped work and ran out to see. He said: “They fired towards the running guy.”

A third eyewitness told Bernews: “It was two shooters on a black bike. They rode across, shot twice. The bike
stalled for about 10 seconds and they let off about another six shots. Everyone ran through the yards behind Haywards and the hardware store. The shooters chased one of the man behind the hardware store and continued to shoot at him. Both rider and passenger were shooting.”

Firearm Incident Warwick Jan 5th 2011-1-13

“They made their escape over Khyber Pass. The police did not respond until about 15 minutes after the incident. The police then chased an innocent victim over Cedar Hill and crashed into him and drove their car over him. Shame on the police!”

Police spokesman Dwayne Caines said two area schools, T.N. Tatem Middle School and Warwick pre-school, were under placed lockdown immediately after the incident and the stretch of Middle Road where the shots were fired was temporarily closed to traffic while officers investigated.

And after such a quiet holiday! It was only a matter time I guess!! HUGE SIGH!!!

  2. Justice says:

It is about time these rotten people are dealt with, using a STRONG arm of the law. The sad thing is too many people are related to, or friends with, the criminals in this country, and they are too pathetic, wimpy, and weak to turn in these monsters. This enables them to spread like a rampant disease.
Bermuda has become a trash heap, compared to the beauty it once was. And this is all due to the certain group of individuals who are gangsters or wannabe-gangsters.
Their mentality is a disease that is infecting all the youth in Bermuda, and it will only become much worse. How do guns get in Bermuda? Think for one minute hard, and you will find your answer, using common sense.
These monsters do not deserve to be called human, because they enjoy the pride associated with harming or killing others. Such monsters should be punished by a STRONG arm of the law that is not afraid to HURT THEM BACK. Examples should be made of these monsters, like it was done in yesteryear.
When the law is too afraid to punish hard, then crime rises. Simple.
By law I mean LAW OF THE LAND AND THE POLICE FORCE.
Guns are not made here, they are brought in. Stop that influx, and stop more guns. Check the regiment for illegal supplies. Remember the regiment grenade allegedly found under a car years ago?
People who are hiding criminals, or witholding information should be punished severely, as they are no better than the monsters they protect. It does not matter if these protectors are mommas or poppas, or grannies. It does not matter how often they attend church or how nice they dress. They are causing the ruin of Bermuda.
When the wimps GROW some courage and stop being such losers, then they will turn in the criminals who are poisoning our island and its international image.
New York City has about 22 million people, and only 532 murders in 2010. Compare that to Bermuda. It is just pathetic.
Thanks a lot, you worthless monsters. Go count your money. God will have the last laugh.

    • White Jesus says:

I stand in solidarity with ALL of your comments and it is people like yourself who must get together and wage holy war against the ignorant mentality on this island. I agree 100% that there is a large element of people who sympathise with the criminal element and defend and protect them. People need to realize that every mass murderer and rapist had someone who loved them. That does not make them an angel just because that someone thinks they are. We need to have REAL punishments for these crimes such as public EXECUTION of murderers and rapists. All who disagree can go back to the hell-hole of criminal aquiescence they crawled out of. The good citizens outnumber the criminal (I hope) so lets ‘out-gun’ them and save our civilization. It is literally a matter of the life or death of this nation.
[quote] “The police then chased an innocent victim over Cedar Hill and crashed into him and drove their car over him. Shame on the police!” [unquote] Haha GOOD! if you are ‘innocent’ why do they have to ‘chase’ you? SHAME ON THE ONE RUNNING! NOT the police MORON!

    • Triangle Drifter says:

But but but but…Justice & White Jesus you two racists are being insensitive. Have compassion for the families of this human slime. Where will they get the money for the new cars, the huge entertainment systems, the travel & all those other necessities of life without their gangster sons? Be reasonnable. Bermuda is getting exactly what it voted for. When the voters pull their heads out of the sand, & if there is anything worth saving when they do, there will be a fundamental change.

Good on the BPS in the meantime. Lets hope that the courts or some slick lawyer doesn’t let them off on some flimsy technicallity like one of you guys forgot to cross a ‘t’.

      • Uncle Ruckus says:

LOL! Wow 3 racist top comments. Hmmmm I’m betting middle aged white men who live in those big house tucked away behind trees etc. The ones who work in those fancy office building with catered lunches who got there off of the labor, pain and suffering of said gangster sons ancestors. Oh let me guess that has nothing to do with what goes on today right? Typical.

        • White Jesus says:

3 racist comments??? Did you read said comments or did you only read triangle drifter’s satire and assumed that our comments actually were racist.
SURPRISE!, i’m not white moron! And you sir, are a coward and a criminal sympathiser which makes you no less than a criminal. When the good citizens come, and we’re coming soon, we’re coming for the like of you too captain. So go back to your slimy hell-hole of criminal acquiescence punk!

    • Cpl says:

what actual facts do you have to prove that the regiment supplies these weapons, come on justice climb off your preaching horse and stop making biased unsupported comments… how are guns getting in um um let’s see we have extensive water borders that are never patrolled, just last week someone arrested with a whole bunch of weed and you can bet that a lot of these shipments have guns and ammunition in the stash…for the record i am a serving soldier and the regiment is a government agency that is audited every year. shame on you.

  3. Brasco says:

Like I said before…These offenders, once found guilty should be publicly humiliated!!!….Just locking them up is way too soft!!!….Most of our prisoners are repeat offenders who simply just love Jail!!!

  4. Sara says:

Another board daylight shooting near a grocery store.

  5. Peace and Love says:

At the end of the day until we weed out the CORRUPTION at the HIGHER LEVEL this unfortunately will be the way of life in Bermuda…Plain and simple!!!! end of story!!!!

  6. Sarah says:

It’s good to hear that no one was injured in the shooting, but what of the accident? It looks awful.
I can’t listen to the eyewitness report, so I’m not sure if that covers it, but the eyewitness report is….strange. One can only hope that the truth will come out, and that those responsible will be held accountable for their actions.

    • bernews says:

We just added a video statement on that, Police said the rider is not seriously injured…

  7. Angry Mom says:

Forget that the shooting was near a grocery store, or on a public road. Think about the fact that our children cant even learn in peace! A primary school and a preschool with young impressionable children were in the immediate area of todays shooting. I found out that my childs school was on lockdown and felt helpless because there was nothing I could do.
These young people are our future and these gunman are getting sloppy and arrogant. Yes, I know that we have laws but Bermuda Law is like a slap on the wrist. Somthing needs to be done to instill the same fear in them that they have in us and our children.

    • Seriously Speaking says:

I am sooo glad that someone was intereted enough in all this rhetoric to notice that there were two schools, a preschool and middle school on lock down due to this.

Oh and by the way does anyone know if the Ministry of Education has procedures in place for schools to follow in the event of a necessary lock down like this?

Ooops my bad . . . they are not that progressive yet . . . still living in their fantasy world of Bermuda in the 1980′s!

      • areUserious says:

@ Seriously Speaking ALL schools have Emergency Procedures implemented should such events as this occur..so yeah it’s ‘ooops your bad” Like others who seem to find fault with the Education system maybe you should give input with the hopes of reaching solution..surely at least SOME of your relatives attend school and fall under this regime….

  8. Call as it is says:

These are not people…they are VERMIN!

and VERMIN needs to be dealt with only one way…

  9. areUserious says:

You can blame it on guns,
You can blame it on thugs,
You can blame it on stupidity and lack of education
You can blame it on drugs….
But at the end of the day as long as there is corruption THIS is the Bermuda that we will come to know..

  10. US Observer says:

Do we know if any of these culprits even Bermudian?

    • bermyshotta says:

@ US Observer…um ya wat dey gonna be, filipino’s lol?

      • Ummm says:

Umm ya dey could be Jamaican…beijan…American since Bermuda opens it’s doors to any and every kind!!

  11. Terry says:

Only a matter of time when having a gun to protect yourself will be the norm in Bermuda.

  12. 2011 >FTP says:

What you mean good on the BPS are you serious???

here we have a bystander who was sitting off with them boys at hayward who was getting shot at just because he was wearing all black no questions ask the BPS has the right to run him over???

thats ludacris im sorry to say, but bermudians you all just comment on post going by the topic & not going by facts (prime example relating to nye incident)

angry mom i totally agree with you but its still not right running over an innocent bystander

    • Hmmm.... says:

If he was truely innocent – WHY did he NOT pull over for the police and allow a chase to ensue????

      • Peace and Love says:

@ Hmmmm why did the Police just take his plate number? Not only was the rider putting the public in danger the Police were as well in their pursuit of an alleged suspect. two wrongs don’t make a right!!!

        • Hmmm.... says:

Who is to say how the accident happened – i don’t really care – what i am saying is RIGHT is the clear fact that if the police follow someone it is the LAW to pull over.

My comment was directed at those that said he was an innocent bystander. His actions have indicated otherwise.

          • 2011 >FTP says:

FYI the law is if a police call is following you and they have there sirens thats means PULL OVER.

following you its whole new thing (the maybe just looking for trouble)

i am to say how it happened if i stated it you cant change what those who witness actually saw, are you for real???

            hmmmmmmmmmmmm

        • Scott says:

getting a license number is stupid..if you could catch/arrest based just on that we’d be laughing at criminals. but stolen bikes, changed tags, borrowed bikes, or just someone that hides after their own bike is noted.. doesnt mean squat.

he shouldnt have been hit so hard perhaps in hindsite, but at hte time a guy speeding away from police right after a shooting is NOT the best action to do.

as for the nye, from what i saw of the pic the guy slammed right into the side of the paddywagon?? did the paddy run a red light? or was it the bike drivers fault?

          • Peace and Love says:

How could he have been speeding from if they were travelling in opposite directions???

            • Scott says:

true.. you cant possible start trying to get away from someone until they are facing your back… forgot! >.<

i dont know the details… but im sure the cops didnt see some random person and just vere into them cause it seemed the fun thing to do, as some seems to make it out like.

              • areUserious says:

Scott in a related article it stated that the colour of the bike was the same..it has happened..yes they pick randomly at times..if it has never happened to you than you wouldn’t know…The bike to my understanding although not the same make as the one the perps were riding it was the same colour….At the end of the day the police are going to say what they wanna say and the witnesses are going to do likewise..I was not there and neither were you but hopefully in time the truth will reveal itself..If the young man in question was wrong than that was his consequence..but if the Police are in the wrong will they publically admit it?? I don’t know if you are aware but if you use something to inflict harm or injury on another person than the object you use is now considered a weapon.. in this case the police car was the weapon…I mean like really crossing in front of someone INTENTIALLY? They could have killed him! Top and Bottom line!!! and than what will they have told his family..he didn’t stop so we ran him over..sorry for your loss! Come on people if you don’t want to be honest in your postings at least be honest with yourself..if it was a family member that you were close with you would be singing a different tune..Like I said I was not there but if it happened as people say that was a foul thing to do!!!

                • Scott says:

wlel i havent been rammed into a wall before, no, but i have been arrested when walking home once. i had a limp (previous ankle injury), was drunk (hence walking). There was an accident where the driver fled… i happened to be somewhat nearby and was apicked up. so yes i know what its like. luckily for me, the police station that i was released from what closer to my house then where they picked me up.

yes i agree that they probably did use too much force on this, judging by the pic, and they should apologize in some form, but i think for people to cry out a big WTF when they at the time thought they may be arresting the actual shooter, it think they should get a little more empathy. Everyone assumes their job is easy, cut/paste, etc.

                  • Peace and Love says:

@ Scott and we all know what “thought” made a man do…Yes their job may be hard but they need to brainstorm and think of strategies that they can use and put them into practice..In their being over zealous at times they create problems for themselves when arresting or trying to solve a crime in the hopes of getting someone convicted.. They go about it in the wrong way and in their haste the person gets off on a technicality..My son was arrested one time and when I got to the police station I asked the officer why was he arrested and he replied that he fit the desription of the perp. I than asked how so? he replied that the individual was wearing a black jacket with a hood (that’s what my son was wearing at the time)I looked at him and asked him if he wanted to put the cuffs on me as I was wearing a black hooded jacket? he couldn’t even respond because he realised how silly that sounded. he called out the back and my son was released immediately..So sometimes they do get a little “excited” as with this case..

          • 2011>FTP says:

they never asked him to stop they saw him on his bike wearing black and assumed he was the shooter so they rammed him over, if any thing he was one of the individual getting shot at!!!

as for nye, the police never had any sort of sirens on to indicate the rider to stop the car slammed into them from behind causing them to hit the paddy wagon. its crazy how they pulled them over on front street a few mins before and they use they’re sirens at that time, and what you think the rider had did; THEY STOPPED FOR THEM!!!

BPS cause they’re the law they feel that they can do & get away with any/everything, people look at things in one directions instead of 3 and do to the fact that there the law the public will always be in the wrong???

people wonder why its alot of unsolve murders going on in the island!!

(((was it kiss or nas that said “we can buy a way out of jail but we cant buy freedom we can buy alot of clothes but we dont really need them…”)))

  13. HMS Dawson says:

Another day another pile of natives shooting each other for a dope plant. Roll the British war ships in and declare marshall law and tackle this disease once and for all. The police are useless. Everytime you see an officer of the law, he or she is playing with their blackberry.

  14. 177BC says:

Has anyone actually looked at the top picture??? I am not and will never try to take away from the issues at hand because the shooting and the shooters yesterday seriously need to be delt with!!!!!

But I will say that both the police and the media are trying to feed us with a “collision” of a BIKE and a police car!!!!! That is attempted murder if you ask me!!! And to think that this is only a person of interest (more likely someone who was riding a similar bike…like its unusual in Bermuda)!!! The Police car is LITERALLY on top of the bike AND the wall!!! It’s a miricale that no serious injuries were reportedly made!!! But what would come of this “collision” if serious injury was had or worse the person died….not to mention if this person is not the person they are looking for???

Again I am not trying to take away from the incidents yesterday and infact I hope the guy they ran over is the shooter….I just needed to shed some light on the “collision” yesterday!!!

    • sigh says:

I Must Agree With You…. That Is Just Sad, Very Sad…. And What Do The Police Have To Say About This One.. It Looked Like The Bike That Was Described, He Didnt Stop When Asked… Sigh.. And FYI The Shooters Would Not Be Riding The Same Bike That They Committed The Crime On, In The Same Area.. Come On Now, Um Just Saying.

      • Mack says:

You aren’t dealing with rocket scientists here….and one man convicted was riding the same bike around in the same clothes about 15 minutes after he shot on Court St…so one never knows.

    • Peace and Love says:

@ 177BC you know full well (even those with their heads buried in the sand and in denial)that the Police will turn it around in their favor to try and come out smelling like a rose.. But at the end of the day, as I posted above, two wrongs don’t make a right!! Yes the rider could have/should have pulled over, but the police could have just taken his plate number..BOTH of them put the safety of the public at risk. The liability does not just fall at the feet of the rider..

  15. Truth is killin' me says:

Police tell you to stop…you STOP!No ifs ands or buts!!!

    • Triangle Drifter says:

It really is that simple. You see the lights. You hear the syreen. You stop. The cops really don’t have time to check your tag to see who you are. Did you have a stable family upbringing? Did you have breakfast this morning? Are you hurrying home to use the bathroom.

      Stop.

If you don’t whatever happens to you is your own fault. The cops have a job to do. They are not nursery school teachers bending over backwards to make sure some little dears feelings are not hurt.

      • 177BC says:

ACTUALLY the sirens and lights are a notice to the public that there is an emergancy they are racing to…there is nowhere in Bermuda Litigation that states that you as a vehicle are obligated to STOP!!! You are only suggested to pull over or slow down to let the emergancy vehicle pass!!!

Please if you are going to say something in the defence of the wrong doings of the Police make sure you have the correct information!!!!!!!

        • Scott says:

well nowhere in the book of common sense does it say that when you see the lights and siren, drive faster and see how long you can stay in from of the emergency vehicle either..

you sound like a few friends of mine that read and read and take the word of law so literally, but try to ignore (for your own protection perhaps, or just to sound smart) the interpretation of the law to claim innocence or immunity.

Someone shoots, runs, a cop see’s him drop the gun the whole time into a dumpster, gets the gun but then in court because he didnt have a search warrant for the dumpster, the gun is ruled out and the shooter goes free. Sure a defence attorney would love this.. and while it does protect some offenders, when its so blatant in front of you, why try to act smart with “theres nowhere actually written”??

if a cop is buzzing lights behind you, and NOT passing you… then he’s probably directing them AT you. To say i dont HAVE to stop may be fully legal, but unwise and gives probable cause for some other sort of crime.

          • real talk says:

Let me just say this, NONE of you were there so you cant assume anything. How does a police car chase you driving towards you? Im sure there are better means of stopping someone then to drive into them.

            • Scott says:

              no you are correct.

were you there though? Can you definitively say the guy really was just cruising by and the cop just veered and rammed though?

  16. Jus' Askin' says:

So it is stated that they were told to stop. They did not stop,so now it is okay to run them over. How do you get a Police car up on a wall?

    • Truth is killin' me says:

@Jus’ Askin’ You sound like an enabler. One of those people that keeps giving a junkie money for his next fix! Crying over and defending people who break the law! This island doesn’t need enablers like you.

      • 177BC says:

I doubt that @ Jus’ Askin’ wsa enabling anybody!!! I think its more sarcasism then anything!!! I want to know the answer to the same question…How DO you get a car on top of a wall + a bike?

      • Jus' Askin' says:

So the Police should be allowed to conduct themselves as they pleased? When did two Wrongs make a Right?

  17. Winnie says:

Good job BPS just remember got to stop tip toeing through the Oleander. A few people inferring the shooters might not be Bermudians what matters is whomever is commiting these crimes be prevented from doing so or apprended and bought before the courts. Just another example of the head in the sand approach we take on everything negative trying to blame it on someone else. Please note these acts are taking place on this 21sq right here right in front of us if you are not awake welllllllllllllllll.

  18. talk to me straight says:

    1. We were traveling in different dirrection.
    2. The police had no sirens on or lights flashing
    3. I was never asked in no way to stop,I WAS JUST RAMMED INTO THE WALL
Sad thing is that if this had this resulted in death nothing would have even come out of it

    • 177BC says:

Please let me know if there was a Police Blockade there while you were riding!!! and Please inform @Justice of it as well!!!

  19. I am not sorry to say this, but you are a moron for accusing me for being racist. I never mentioned or hinted at any race or skin color.

Shame on you!!!!!! I will not even waste my time any more on this….

and anyone who mentions suffering of ancestors at a time like this is just pathetic… just keep your lips closed on that topic.. what a joke.

criminals are criminals regardless of race. if you enjoy harming others or killing, then you should be harshly punished. that is not racist.

    DUH

and by the way… if you race through a Police Blockade and ignore to stop which iS LAW BY THE WAY…then you are a reasonable suspect and they will chase you…
if you drive like an idiot and get chased and it is dangerous, BLAME YOUR DANGEROUS DRIVING!!!!!!

how many people will attack the police for doing their job???? heavens sake!!!!

THANK YOU ALL FOR THE STUPID COMMENTS

    • Jus' Askin' says:

If they were doing their job, we would not have such incidents. True or False?

    • Just want to know says:

I can only assume you did not read the gentleman statement before posting yours. He stated they where traveling in different directions, with no sirens on. Let see what BPS has to say. Also he was never asked to stop..

    • 177BC says:

      HOLD ON REAL QUICK SWEETIE!!!!!!!!!!

There has been NO mention of there being a police bolackade so please explain MY STUPID COMMENT!!!!! And because I’m sure your thinking “I wasn’t talking about just you” I’M REFFERING TO JUST ME

If you were there and want to shine a light on the actual happeneing then I am ALL EARS….if not DO NOT reply on my statements!!!!!!!

      • Peace and Love says:

Hold on Sunshine..this is an open forum therefore I have the right to respond to any comment I choose..you were the one to “set it off” first by sarcastically thanking everyone for their stupid comments! My suggestion to you is that if you can’t handle reponse to your comments maybe you should just read the articles and don’t comment..because obvioulsy you can’t handle it..I on the other hand I will continue to post as I have no fear or retribution or reprisal and I can handle constructive crticism..I am allowed to voice my opinion just as you are quite free to voice yours.. Peace and Love and may you enjoy the rest of your day!!!

        • Peace and Love says:

@ 177BC not referring to you..posted under the wrong spot..

  20. Terry says:

    False.

  21. Real Talk says:

Bleeding hearts… It never ceases to amaze me how people demand an end to all this nonsense and then get all bent out of shape when a “person of interest” in a shooting incident fails to stop and ends up with a Police Car parked on top of them. They should have stopped. End of story.

Too many of us aren’t prepared to go the distance. Some a$$hole (possibly the same a$$hole) just opened fire in a public place with innocent bystanders, ACROSS from a bleddy nursery school and folks are up in arms about the way in which a person of interest was apprehended when they failed to stop?! God help us all if we are now putting the rights of individuals breaking the law (ie, person failed to stop)before public safety!

    • Scott says:

indeed. hindsight is really kicking in here. Had it had actually been the shooter, im sure the tone of these comments would be greatly more swayed in the other direction, albeit probably not entirely. After hte fact we realize it wasnt the shooter and everyoen bitches and moans… had the news incorrectly noted it was the shooter, so many more people would be happy that police arent takiing any crap.

  22. Mack says:

So people complain that police aren’t doing anything to stop the shootings…yet, when they decide to stop a bike suspected in a shooting, people complain about how they decided to stop the bike…the police car was responding to the shooting and saw the bike (read the police statement and yes, I’m sure there will be a comment that it is lies) which they thought was involved in the shooting…a shooting were children and mulitple businesses are nearby…so who cares if they rammed the bike…they stopped it. And you can’t just take note of the plate as someone mentioned, as most of the bikes involved in shootings are stolen, have fake plates or no plate at all. Yes I said they are not rocket scientists a little bit earlier, but they do have a brain.

Its also nice to see all the people with negative comments here have nothing to say on the other article about capturing 2 robbers and retreiving a gun…

In these times, everyone has to get off each others backs and support the work people do to keep us safe. If someone decides to run, they are guilty of something…so let them feel the consequences.

    • 2011 >FTP says:

you really think that if that boy had something to do with the shooting would actually be riding around in cedar hill, i swore on the news they said the rider rode over kyber path furthermore the public may complain about shootings as well as unsolve murders its not right they stopped him the way they did.

what if he would have ended up dead, the BPS would have blame the whole thing on him when they are really unsure if his even a suspect???

      • areUserious says:

Yes Mr. Caines did say that Police arrived on the scene 15 whole minutes later and that the perps rode over Khyber Pass.

With how he was ALLEGEDLY handled the Police wonder why no one wants to help them!!

  23. Terry says:

    Good point/s Mack.

Regarding the two robbers and a gun? That was good police work, cut and dry.

  24. Justice says:

LET THE PUBLIC TAKE A VOTE ON MY RECOMMENDATION: – and VOICE YOUR OPINIONS IN PUBLIC, UNTIL THESE LAWS ARE PASSED! anyone who thinks these are extreme is a wimp, who has more favor for crime than a passion for justice.

    1. Punishment for posession of a firearm, even with no ammo – 25 years MANDATORY IMPRISONMENT, with at LEAST 10 years SOLITARY CONFINEMENT without ANY CHANCE of parole or lessening of sentence severity.
    2. Punishment for posession of an automatic firearm, even with no ammo – 50 years MANDATORY IMPRISONMENT, with at least 20 years SOLITARY CONFINEMENT without ANY CHANCE of parole or lessening of sentence severity.
    3. Punishment for posession of live ammo – 5 years MANDATORY IMPRISONMENT for EACH and EVERY bullet in posession. If you have a huge magazine of ammo, pay the price with life in prison. What are those bullets for, besides taking lives anyways?
    4. Punishment for gang membership – MANDATORY 5 years in prison, in combination with a curfew of SUNDOWN every day for 10 years after release from prison. If in violation of the curfew, sent to prison for ONE YEAR MANDATORY for each day curfew is offended. We all know how these wannabe gangsters BRAG about not being scared of prison time.
    5. Punishment for gang intimidations, initiations, extortions – MANDATORY 10 years in prison, with at least 5 years in solitary confinement.
    6. Punishment for shooting a firearm in ANY vicinity, regardless of how many people were there, innocent or not innocent people – 50 YEARS MANDATORY IMPRISONMENT per bullet fired, with at LEAST 10 years SOLITARY CONFINEMENT without ANY CHANCE of parole or lessening of sentence severity. Cut these fools no slack.
    7. Punishment for shooting a firearm and injuring ANYONE, regardless of innocence or guilt, or severity of injury – 50 YEARS MANDATORY IMPRISONMENT per bullet fired, with at LEAST 10 years SOLITARY CONFINEMENT without ANY CHANCE of parole or lessening of sentence severity in combination with one finger amputated for each bullet fired. YES. Who will argue no?
    8. Punishment for shooting a firearm and injuring ANYONE, regardless of innocence or guilt, and thus causing that victim to be grievously harmed – 50 YEARS MANDATORY IMPRISONMENT per bullet fired, with at LEAST 10 years SOLITARY CONFINEMENT without ANY CHANCE of parole or lessening of sentence severity, plus the amputation of one entire hand, and the amputation of one finger on the remaining hand for each bullet fired. If you run out of fingers, you amputate toes.
    9. Punishment for causing the death of anyone, whether they were innocent or guilty, whether intentionally or by accident, by using a firearm – mandatory 50 years in prison, with at least 25 years SOLITARY CONFINEMENT without ANY CHANCE of parole or lessening of sentence severity – and both hands are to be totally amputated. If two people were killed, then a foot is to be amputated. If three people killed, then both feet amputated. The wheelchair will be donated. For each additional murdered victim, another section of limb is to be amputated – up to the elbow or knee for example.
    10. Involvement in covering up any such criminal behaviour, will receive punishment of PUBLIC WHIPPING. There shall be 10 furious lashes on the back, just like in the Middle East, for every minor charge, and for a major charge there shall be 20 lashes. The lashes must draw blood.
    11. I also further suggest anyone guilty of the first 9 offenses listed above be given 10 to 20 public lashes of a similar manner in public. Carry the scars of your shame. Go to the beach, we know who you are. Enjoy.

WOW! I feel your frustration at the very sorry state of affairs that Bermuda is in these days but WHOAA, them thar is some pretty heavy penalties.

Don’t place me in the ‘excuse makers’ column. There are plenty of them here. I’d like to see some serious penalties for offenses as listed but you & I both know that flogging, public or in a prison setting, is not going to fly.

There has to be plenty of penalties that are unpleasant enough to make the offenders have second thoughts of doing them the first time never mind multiple times.

    • Scott says:

Justice, strengthening punishments is all fine and dandy, and im sur ea lot would love it..

but remember, isnt the mandatory possession of firearm a 10year sentence? mandatory possession of blade in public a 3 year sentence? draconian or not, if our current sentencings are not upheld, then harsher punishments will do nothing, as there is a good chance they will never be enacted.

  25. Terry says:

Justice………Took a lot of work to come up with those punishments.

    “11.”..

Wow…after all that thinking and work their out on the beach with scars………………………………

    Go back too No.1

    Good read.

    MY IMPORTANT LETTER
Wow! A handgun bullet can travel from 1 – 2 miles away. When a lot of people don’t want to get involved by speaking up/helping the police/crime stoppers etc. or they say “Let them keep shooting each other and when everyone is dead then you can lock up the last one standing”, please remember this: You can be 1- 2 miles away out in your yard hanging up clothes or cutting grass and ‘bang’ you are shot by a stray bullet.
Scary thought when you imagine during the lunch break, little nursery children playing in the school yard & the hundreds & hundreds of children at the other area schools (T.N.Taten, Purvis, Bda Institute etc.) in the immediate Warwick shooting 1 – 2 mile bullet travel shooting radius area.
I don’t know what emergency plans they have (if any) to round up hundreds of children and get them to safety when they are already outdoors any and every where on the school property and how long would it take 10 – 15 mins??. Unless there is a special siren. My child attended one of the schools I mentioned and they have never being told of any ‘special lock-down rules to follow. I have seen and conducted school fire alarm evacuation drills and they always move like snails and take it all as a big joke. Mind you the adults in a lot of Hamilton businesses also do the same thing. Bernews reader’are Userious quoted:
January 6, 2011 at 7:28 am @ Seriously Speaking ALL schools have Emergency Procedures implemented should such events as this occur. <- where did they get that info??
For parents peace of mind, it would be interesting to hear from someone official in Education system of the emergency lockdown plans both for children in school and outdoors. We in Bermuda grow up believing a lot of 'myths' that was handed down from grandparents to parents to children etc and take it as fact's.

    • Scott says:

while the intention is good, your numbers are far off.

most handguns have an effective range of about 50meters. the potential killing range is a bit more than that, but a far far far cry from 1m.

the closest you’d get to that range would be some form of semi auto assault rifle with an effective range of 700-800 meteres., about half of a mile. unless they had a purpose made long range rifle, the thought of 1-2miles is no where near reality.

    • Peace and Love says:

@ Arthur Raynor..I also go by “areUserious” the quote you refer to above..”ALL schools have Emergency Procedures implemented should such events as this occur”…was written by me. I am employed within the Education System at the Middle School Level so therefore I am aware of Practices and Procedures in regards to emergency situations..We also have a Health and Safety Committee that meets monthly, I am also a Certified Trained Associate in Theraputic Crisis Intervention. In each classroom, office area etc. there are msps showing the area that you need to go to in the event of a fire drill, etc. We also have fire drills on a regular both planned and unplanned (mischievous students sometimes pull the alarm). We also have constingency plans in place should our school have to be placed on lockdown. As I am part of the Health and Safety Team I can tell you that is where I got my info from…Not sure if this is enough clarification for you

      • Arthur - Atlanta says:

Thanks for the clarification and the confirmation but can you tell us how it a lock-down is carried out? In school class would seem pretty straight forward with an announcement made over the internal school PA, but how would it be done during an out of school period such as lunch break? Question #2 Why is it that we as parents or the students don’t know about those lock-down plans?
Please no answers about :It is a secret!

        • areUserious says:

Parents at the school where I am employed are made aware during the beginning of the school year (if they attend PTA meetings, which is another story with in itself), The students are aware because it is practiced when we have fire drills and the like. Please note that the drills are timed. Service personal (Fire ) are notified in advance and are usually present and monitor the reponse time. There are several teachers on duty each lunch period should the students be outside and the alarm is raised.. We do not use the PA system to announce an emergency. an alarm is sounded which can be heard throughout the school and the immediate outside surrounding area? (This is very effective) Should the power be out we do have access (without using personal cell phones) to reach 911 and seek further assistance if needed, we have Security Guards on site 24-7 and there are also other members of staff that like myself are trained in Crisis Intervention.

I have given you a basic outline and with outmost respect I would rather not share the full details within a public domain for obvious reasons with the biggest concern being sited as posing a “threat to security” (We woudn’t want the wrong person to see it).

If you live here I cannot explain why YOUR Child/Childrens school have not shared their plans.

Having been unlucky enough to be driving by in my car as this incident unfolded, I can now tell you that after having lived my whole 55 year old life in Bermuda I now know what a 9 mm gun looks like. I now know what its like to have duck down in my car at noon on a main road as people spray bullets like its some war zone. I now what its like to have to tell me friends from away please don’t visit me here – its not safe. I want to run away…….
