The concept was the brain child of executive producer, Shane Woodley whose previous professional experience in the music industry, spans far beyond our island shores. Mr. Woodley a former employee of Roc A Fella Records, worked alongside artists such as Jay Z, Freeway, Memphis Bleek, Beyonce, Rhianna. After working with Jay Z on several albums, Mr. Woodley relocated to Atlanta to work with artist and song writer, Neo.

His return to the island has inspired him to bring his level of expertise to the local music industry. In the summer of 2010, he put the challenge out to all local artists, new and old, to see who would make Da Squad.

The idea surrounding this debut album is that Mr. Woodley deliberately hand selected only eleven artists to form Da Squad, ‘Bermuda’s musical national team.’

Da Squad for 2011 consists of island’s favorites, like reggae singer Troy Anthony, as well as upcoming stars such as 15 yr old Jelani and 17 yr old Yung Mac who prove they deserve their space on the team. Others include: Kombat, KD da Beast, Fyah B, E-Levels, Candace Furbert, BLAC and Big Snipes.

The album is a great mix of reggae, hip hop, rap, dancehall, R&B and gospel. The album’s first single “Mi A Pray” by Cheetah, released in November 2010 and has been receiving regular radio time on local stations as well as praise overseas, even shout outs from Jamaican radio personality, ZJ Liquid from Zip.fm.

The local music and entertainment industry has pulled together to support the album. Comedians, Nadanjah and Jah of 2 Fools perform humorous interludes, as Premier League expert commentators announcing the players. Chewstick has offered to provide an opportunity for audiences to see Da Squad perform at their new space on Court Street. Dunn Deal Entertainment will be hosting special Thirsty Thursday at Captain’s Lounge. Local legend Shine Hayward will be hosting an album release party this Saturday, February 5th, 2011 at Shine’s Place starting at 10pm; tickets are $20 in advance with DJs Dynasty and D’General leading the celebrations playing the best of hip hop, reggae and R&B.

Da Squad Starting Eleven will be on sale Tuesday, February 8th, 2011 for $20 at Sound Stage, Music Box, and Music World or by contacting Shane Woodley directly at dasquadcd@gmail.com or 599-8969. For more information on the album, events or performance please check out the website Dasquadcd.com
