February Schedule: Free Employment Workshops

The Department of Labour and Training’s training schedule and descriptions for February 2011 is below. Classes include: Resume Critique and Development, Interviewing Skills, Short-Term Programs to Get a Better Job, Job Search Strategies, Hospitality Industry Job Preparation Program and more.

Workshops are held at The Department of Labour and Training unless otherwise noted and are free to all participants. Registration is preferred, please call the Department at 297-7714/16 or register via email to jloweteart -at- gov.bm.

Introduction to Microsoft Excel 2007, Tuesdays, February 1st – 22nd, 2011, 4:00 – 5:30

Facilitator – D. Foggo, Objectives:

* To provide a basic introduction to Microsoft Excel 2007.
* Designed for individuals with little or no experience with Microsoft Excel.
* Instruction will include entering and editing cell data, formatting worksheet data, working with cell ranges, completing basic calculations, working with formulas, and creating charts.

Resume Critique and Development: Marketing Your Skills, Wednesday, February 9, 2011, 10:00 – 12:00

Facilitator – D. Smith, Executive Director, Bermuda Careers Centre. Objectives:

* To identify the main components of a good resume.
* To identify widely accepted resume formats.
* To gain the skills to draft a new or revised resume that will effectively market your skills and experience to your next employer.

Interviewing Skills: Why I Should Be Hired, Thursday, February 10, 2011, 10:00 – 12:00

Facilitator: D. Smith, Executive Director, Bermuda Careers Centre. Objectives:

* Share and discuss tips for effective interview preparation.
* Share and discuss effective verbal and non-verbal communication during the interview.
* Share and discuss effective post interview follow-up.
* Share and discuss marketable skills and qualifications that increase your marketability.
* Assess personal traits, work ethic, and skills that would contribute to the success of the organization.
* Discuss effective network strategies to market yourself to employers.

Job Club and Networking Group, Wednesdays, February 9th-23rd, 2011, 10:30 – 11:30

Facilitator: J. Teart, Vocational Officer, Department of Labour and Training. Objectives:

* To provide a networking platform and support during the job hunting process.
* To foster optimism and successful job search.
* To identify jobs matched to individuals’ skill set and assist in navigating the hidden job market.
* To provide support for those experiencing layoff and redundancy.
* To equip participants with effective job search strategies.
* To assist individuals with their marketing tools (i.e. resumes, cover letters) and interviewing skills.

Short-Term Programs to Get a Better Job, Friday, February 11, 2011, 10:30 – 11:30

Facilitator – C. Clarke, Recruitment Officer, Bermuda College. Objectives:

* To assist unemployed adults and learners seeking a career change.
* To identify programs for unemployed and adult learners to upgrade skills for job stability or career advancement mobility.

Applying in Writing: Constructing a Cover Letter, Monday, February 14, 2011, 10:00 – 11:30

Facilitator – J. Teart, Vocational Officer, Department of Labour and Training. Objectives:

* To share information on what documents should be included with written applications.
* To discuss types of submission for written applications (i.e. email, post) and appropriate etiquette.
* To identify steps to consider before constructing a cover letter.
* To share how to construct a cover letter, what should be included, and the appropriate format.

National Training Board: Apprenticeships and Certification, Tuesday, February 15, 2011, 10:00 – 11:30

Facilitator –National Training Board. Objectives:

* To share information on programmes, apprenticeship schemes, sponsorship, and certification.
* To explore the benefits of apprenticeships and obtain information on the process of entering into an apprenticeship/training programme.

Job Search Strategies, Wednesday, February 16, 2011, 10:00 – 12:00

Facilitator: A. Richardson, Training Officer, Department of Labour and Training. Objectives:

* To share and discuss strategies for effective job search
* To share and discuss effective strategies to network to identify opportunities for careers

The Power of Networking: Making the Connection, Thursday, February 17, 2011, 10:30 – 11:30

Facilitator – J. Teart, Vocational Officer, Department of Labour and Training. Objectives:

* To share information on how networking can help with job hunting and increase business opportunities.
* To provide tips on how to build a professional network, continue to grow it, and maintain professional relationships.

Employee Right and Responsibilities, February 18, 2011, 10:30 – 12:00

Facilitator – Department of Labour and Training, Labour Relations Officers. Objectives:

* To provide information on employee rights and responsibilities in the workplace as it relates the Employment Act 2000.
* To provide information relating to redundancy and layoff.
* To identify model employee responsibilities.

Hospitality Industry Job Preparation Program, February 21 – March 1, 2011

Facilitator – The Department of Labour and Training & The Bermuda Hospitality Institute. Objectives:

* To prepare unemployed individuals to apply for entry-level positions within the hospitality industry.
* To ensure job readiness when seeking employment in the hospitality industry.

Please note that the workshops offered are not part of the career development courses offered by the Department of Human Resources for Government employees.

    Please as you can see the only one’s that care, are expats Because they are the only one’s working in Bermuda!!! waste of time and money! PLP you can not keep
    this up to much longer because you have about 35,000 Bermudian’s to take care of
    and I really don’t think that those hard working expats want to pay for all of
    those Lazy Bermudian’s that WILL be homeless and 30,000 voted PLP!!

    So what are you going to do it’s SHOW TIME!!!
