Free Training & Summer Job Placement
The Bermuda Hospitality Institute [BHI] is launching a program which will offer free training for 20 high school students, with the participants guaranteed a full-time summer job in the Island’s hospitality industry upon successful completion.
The program launches March 2011, and is timed for participants to complete prior to school ending in June, 2011. The program is open to those aged 16 and up, and it will require a 10 week commitment after school and on weekends.
In addition to receiving a Certificate of Completion once they’ve passed the program’s final exam, after 90 days on the job graduates can be certified in one of 12 program specialties covered by the course, said Ms. Lacey.
START [Skills, Tasks & Results Training] is a 180 hour AHLA Certificate Program. Specific skills’ training is provided for positions in rooms, food and beverage, guest service, professionalism and career exploration.
START is a quality, career based educational experience that prepares high school students for the vast opportunities that await them in the hospitality industry – whether they choose Hospitality as a career or as an employment opportunity while furthering their education, said BHI CEO, Karla Lacey.
Taught by instructors Shawn DeShields, Hospitality/Business Senior Lecturer, Bermuda College, and Joann Adams, Director Staff Development, Berkeley Institute, a maximum of 20 students will be accepted into the program which will require a 10 week commitment after school and on weekends.
With free training and the promise of summer employment on offer, the program is likely to be popular. Interested persons should contact BHI directly for details on 295-5049 or info@bhi.bm.
That’s a great opportunity. I wish they had that when I was in high school.
I agree! I wish there were opportunities like this when I was much younger.
Taurus- There where opportunities like this when you where younger, it was the Hotel College which produced scores of very fine hoteliers. I find it truly amazing that we continue to spin the reasons for why we don’t have more locals in the hotel industry when we know that the industry has made it abundantly clear that they didn’t really want locals. Oops sorry, they don’t want them to run their plants. What is particularly disturbing is the ground that was lost under a Labour Party. It’s almost impossible for me to attach progressive. Don’t believe this author, do a little digging and take a very close look at the number of Bermudians that held senior positions at the top resorts when the plp assumed the throne and then look at the steady decline. Before you respond , do a little digging.
and most recently we have seen the Newstead Belmont Hills (which was made up of a 99% Bermudian workforce, senior positions included!) put into receivership…. what type of picture are we trying to paint as a country who at one point thrived on Tourism as a pillar of our economy?
Program sounds great… only thing, it’s only 20 positions. Does anyone know of any other places that hire summer students??
I would love to hire a couple of summer students that take this course Bermuda Bistro @ the Beach 103 Front ST
