February 14, 2011

ysoc110214Bermuda’s Brazilian Football School [BBFS] will partner with Whitney Institute Middle School to provide a football and life skills based pilot programme for 20 youth players.

The players will meet once a week from today to 4 April and receive 55-60 minutes of football followed by 10-15 minutes of life skills training which will focus on anti gang, drug and bullying messages, money management, SAT awareness, safe usage of social networking and future career and further education interests. The programme will roll out to other middle schools.

BBFS CEO, Cal Blankendal said, “The overall goal of BBFS is to use football as a motivational tool, to promote personal and team development, teach life skills and promote further education in a challenging, fun and drug free setting.”

HSBC Bermuda has been named title sponsor allowing participants to attend the 7 week programme free of charge. Phil Butterfield, CEO HSBC Bermuda states, “The healthy development of our youth both on and off the football field is critical to the future prosperity of our community. Teamwork, discipline and life skills when demonstrated through ‘play’ create life lessons that translate into positive professional experiences.”

In addition to funding, HSBC Bermuda staff is getting involved and delivering life skills sessions. Khari Sharrieff, Business Product Manager at HSBC Bermuda, a recent inductee to the University of South Carolina Hall of Fame for his goal scoring and former Wolves and North Village striker, will discuss the importance of teamwork and discipline and how these skills, learned on the football field, carry over to the workplace. Paula Marshall, Senior Business Development Manager, will introduce the importance of money management and savings.

The programme is based on middle school students ages 11 -14 who are at a key stage in their lives. The programme reinforces positive lifestyles and healthy decisions in a safe and fun environment.

Graduates of the BBFS Life Skills Programme will be invited to participate in the HSBC sponsored BBFS College Showcase, April 4-8, 2011, facilitated by Bermuda’s Brazilian Football School. More details on the College Showcase will follow by March 1, 2011.
