Las Vegas: Bermuda Select Rugby Report
[Written by Ian Henderson] At the weekend, a Bermuda Select rugby team travelled to Las Vegas to take part in the Las Vegas invitational seven’s, featuring a host of teams and countries such as Russia, France and Chile. In the Select team’s first match, they defeated Mexico, coming from 2 tries down to ultimately win 19-17. Scores came from John Jackson (2) and later on Jack Elison following an injury time break from Mike Kane. Tommy Edwards was successful with 2 of the conversions.
In the second match, Bermuda Select lost out to a strong University of Victoria outfit 24-14. Bermuda Select score tries through vice-captain Gareth Williams and Henry Paddison, with Dan Cole and Mike Kane adding the extras.
In their third match, Bermuda were awarded a 14-0 win after Russia failed to turn up.
The first day’s results meant the Bermuda Select team would play Chile in the quarter finals.
Bermuda Select dug in deep but ultimately went down 17-0 to an impressive Chile team which went on to win the overall tournament, beating France Select in the final.
The defeat to Chile put Bermuda Select into the plate semi-final where they lost to Dog River Howlers 28-7. Neville Zuill scored Bermuda Select’s try which was converted by captain Tommy Edwards.
Overall a successful trip and a great exercise for National Team Coach Lawrence Bird as the National Team faces games in the upcoming months.
League action resumes this weekend with Teachers taking on Mariners at 1pm and Renegades vs Police at 3:30pm. Ladies games kick off at 12 noon. All games are at National Sports Centre on Sunday.
