Misty Copeland to Perform in Bermuda

One of the top black ballet dancers in the world will be gracing the stage in Bermuda next week. Misty Copeland is the first African American soloist at American Ballet Theatre, which is considered one of the top ballet companies in the U.S.

The National Dance Foundation of Bermuda announced today that Misty Copeland and Sascha Radetsky, soloists with American Ballet Theatre, will be featured performers at An Evening with Don Kramer, the Foundation’s annual fundraising gala to be held on Saturday, February 19, 2011 at the Fairmont Southampton Resort.

Miss Copeland and Mr. Radetsky will be joined on the programme by 20 Bermudian dancers who have participated in training, in Bermuda and abroad, provided by the National Dance Foundation.

In addition to her history-making position as the first African American soloist at American Ballet Theatre, Miss Copeland [pictured] was handpicked by the rock star Prince to appear in his Crimson and Clover video and performed with him during his global tour last year.

Mr. Radetsky has also broadened the scope of his impressive dance career to include performances as an actor on stage and screen, including a role in the dance film Center Stage.

At the National Dance Foundation’s gala, Miss Copeland will dance the Gulnare third act variation from Le Corsaire. She and Mr. Radetsky will perform together in an excerpt from Twyla Tharp’s Broadway triumph Sinatra Suite.

Sharing the stage with Miss Copeland and Mr. Radetsky will be senior Bermuda dancers Dominique Anderson, Sierra-Renae De Silva, Fredrika Hill, Alexis Richens and Krystal Smith who will perform Between the Light and Me, a work choreographed by Emmy-award winning choreographer and So You Think You Can Dance judge Stacey Tookey.

Young Bermuda dancers aged 12 – 15 years will perform Aurora’s Friends from Act 1 of The Sleeping Beauty which was presented during DanceBermuda’s 2010 workshop production.
