Food Drive Seeks to Help Needy Families

March 2, 2011

Digicel Bermuda and Hands of Love Ministry joined forces for a food drive to assist Bermudian families, which aims to provide canned goods and non-perishable food items to hungry families on the island.

All Digicel customers will receive a text message notifying them of the food drive and the ways they can help. Customers may bring non-perishable food items to the stores for donation or they may make a monetary donation by sending a text message with the word “GIVE” to 4483. All proceeds will go directly to Hands of Love Ministry to assist with the food drive. The collection will end on March 11, allowing just over one week for donations.

While all canned goods and non-perishable foods will be accepted, Ms Wade suggested some staples that will go a long way in feeding a hungry family. The list includes pasta, tuna fish [or any canned meat], juice boxes, baked beans, canned vegetables, sauces, crackers, cereal, sugar, and rice.

“We realize that times are hard for many families due to the tough economic climate,” stated Digicel Bermuda CEO, Wayne Caines. “Digicel encourages all our customers, and any other concerned residents, to bring your cans and non-perishables to either Digicel store so we can add them to the food hampers going to the needy.”

“The support pledged by Digicel is in keeping with our motto: ‘It’s not about me; it’s about we.’ It takes the whole village to help the villagers that live within,” stated Fern Wade, Administrator for the Hands of Love Ministry. “In the community, we are all neighbors. This is a great cause to open your hearts to ensure that all families will not only have food for today, but for tomorrow also.”
