Nominations For 2011 Public Health Awards
The Department of Health is now inviting nominations for the Public Health Awards 2011.
A spokesperson said, “The key health issue for Public Health Week 2011 (which begins on Monday April 4th, 2011) is Preventing Antibiotic Resistance with the theme “Get Smart: Know When Antibiotics Work.” Antibiotic resistance, also known as drug resistance, occurs when antibiotics can no longer cure bacterial infections.”
“Over-prescribing antibiotics, starting and stopping medications, giving leftover medications to a friend who appears to have the same ailment you had, all contribute to the problem of antibiotic drug resistance.”
“Physicians and Pharmacists play a vital role in protecting the public’s health through promoting appropriate antibiotic use. Antibiotic resistance is combated when physicians prescribe antibiotics only when needed and pharmacists recommend over-the-counter medication for relief from cold and flu symptoms.”
“Appropriate use of antibiotics is important in protecting the public’s health and this is why the Department of Health wishes to recognize physicians’ and pharmacists’ contributions to public health in Bermuda. If you know a physician or pharmacist that has contributed significantly to the health of Bermuda’s population you are invited to nominate them for a Public Health Award.”
“The Public Health Awards ceremony is on Wednesday April 6th, 2011 and nominations are to be submitted no later than Thursday March 31st 2011. To nominate an individual please find the attached form. For more details on who is eligible or to submit a nomination please call Pauleter Stevens on 278-6504 or email healthpromotion@gov.bm.”
