March 14, 2011

The Chewstick Foundation is planning a creative Retreat weekend from Saturday, March 19 until Sunday, March 20, 2011 at Paget Island. The purpose for the retreat is to isolate creatives in an intense, artistic and spiritual environment that encourages personal growth and collaboration. The weekend will comprise of workshops taught by passionate artists in the field, collaborative work, group jam sessions and alone time to allow for personal deepening. Chewstick is targeting to have roughly 30 participants, all 18 and older.

A spokesperson said, “Too often, artists and potentially creative people are caught in the hustle and bustle of daily living and are not able to give their entire attention to their craft. The retreat provides a safe space literally off the main island of Bermuda. Chewstick is encouraging participants to unplug from their cell phones and the worries of daily living and enjoy the reclusive experience of a totally creative weekend disconnected from the regular stresses of their lives. The event will also include a bredren system, which will partner unlikely participants together to create a special artistic bond and encourage collaboration. ”

“The Retreat will feature creative breakout sessions that are a mix of creative people collaborating together and sharing what they’ve done as well as doing group activities. The creative breakout sessions will be taught by passionate people that want to share. We are asking that everyone who attends bring a passion they are willing to share, even if their passion is learning. So far, some of the artists committed to leading workshops include: Joy T. Barnum leading vocal lessons, April Branco leading art, Gavin Djata Smith leading strategic thinking & marketing, K.A.S.E. leading hip hop, Richard Bassett leading song writing, Carly Lodge leading creative writing, Haile Maryam leading Afrikan Science, Chris Astwood leading poetry and Deidra-Lee Bean leading capoeira.”

“The participants depart from St. George’s on Saturday morning at 9 AM sharp for Paget Island. Paget Island is fully serviced with dorms and participants will be sleeping on single-sized bunk beds, for which they will need to bring their own bedding. There are also clean and modern bathroom facilities including showers, meaning that this camping experience is quite the opposite of roughing it. The facilities also feature an industrial-style kitchen as well as a reverse-osmosis plant to provide delicious, fresh water. Chewstick will provide dinner on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday, but asks participants to bring their own lunch for Saturday. There are several classrooms dotted around the island as well as open, grassy spaces if the weather allows for outdoor work. The Chewstick Foundation has tried to subsidize The Retreat to make it as accessible as possible. Because of this, participants are expected to help out whether it is with moving equipment, in the kitchen or tidying up. This will not be strenuous work and will help them form a bond with other Retreat participants.”

“The Retreat costs $65 which includes transport to/from Paget Island, dinner, breakfast, housing, introductory workshop, 2 creative breakouts, bocce tournament, acoustic fireside open-mic jam session and plenty of vibes! For more information, visit www.chewstick.org for a full schedule of events and a sign-up form or call 292-2439 Monday-Friday, 9-5.”
