Dalisa Johnston Enters ‘Miss Island Pageant’
Dalisa Johnston is representing Bermuda in her university’s “Miss Island Pageant,’ and says she hopes to share a bit of Bermuda through the pageant.
The 19-year-old is attending Barry University in Miami studying nursing. She says she opted to join the Miss Island Pageant as she wanted to make those on campus aware that Bermuda is “not just about Bermuda shorts and getting lost at sea” and that Bermuda has much more to offer.
Ms Johnston said, “In this pageant I will be talking about May 24th and Cup Match for my historical piece, doing a majorette routine for my talent, and my bathing suit has flowers on it relating to our hibiscus flower.”
“Sharing these little pieces of Bermuda will make a difference to everyone in attendance learning in a fun way. Bermuda is deep within my heart it’s time to share them with the world.”
The Pageant, hosted by the Barry University Caribbean Student Union, will be held during the month of April, and there will be five judged categories; talent, formal wear, swimwear, history/tradition and Q&A.
The pageant consists of 12 contestants representing the Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, the Cayman Islands, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, St. Lucia, Trinidad & Tobago, the Turks & Caicos and the US Virgin Islands.
The organizers said, “The ‘Miss Island’ beauty pageant will serve as an open forum highlighting twelve islands / territories and their representatives. This pageant will not only focus on the normal, it also focuses on island women’s beauty, intelligence and the cultural awareness that helps mold her into a strong woman; including a young woman’s growth into adulthood through cultural pride and awareness.”
